DIR-815 losing connection
« on: January 08, 2012, 10:56:52 AM »

I am a little baffle that every 3 or so days I lose internet connectivity, particularly after the computers has been setting idle overnight. When I look at the router (d-link) and the modem (netgear) the lights are on. I have set the timing to 0, as indicated.
Today I turned the router on and off (to try to troubleshoot and isolate the cause). The system came on again. I do not want to necessarily assume that the problem is the router and not the modem, or the line, but resetting the router gave me connectivity back. What are your experiences or opinion?

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. I recommend CAT6 and the shorter the better if possible. I use a 1 footer. Swap cable between modem and router. Sometimes these in box cables are not make well.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.

I have set as many of the suggestions as I could. Some features either had a different name inside my router or I could not find them, in which case I did not change the feature for fear of really screwing up my setup.

Here are some of the answers to the questions you asked. Perhaps this will further help me. Right now I won't know if the changes will work as the system has been up and running since this morning. I have to wait a few days and see what happens!

Router H/W ver:A1-F/W:1.00
DSL-AT&T
Modem stand alone
Modem:Netgear DM111PSP-just modem
Using N on one laptop. The other choose the mode automatically.
WPA-personal security mode
wireless devices:2 laptops, 1 iphone
wired:2 desktops, 1 blu-ray disk
yes.. cordless phone

Are you loosing connected on wired devices as well or just wireless?

If your loosing connectivity on both, it's possible there is a problem with the ISP modem and I would check any available logs or status on the ISP modem that you notice a lose of internet. The router can exhibit these symptoms however the issue could be due to the ISP modem. Make sure the Phone lines are in good working order and filtered correctly. Make sure the line from the telephone pole to the building is good too. I've seen issues with this as well that ISPs fail to check on.

I would see if there is any log entries on the 815 router during the time frames you notice a disconnection. Might say if it lost connection with the ISP modem...

This is what I found in the modem log.
I don't know what LCP is. The router log did not show anything that would shed light (not to me anyways)

I would contact the ISP and ask. Those time frames when you notice the disconnection? Think this is and ISP modem or ISP service issue here. I'd ask the ISP if they have any log history on there side with disconnections for that modem.

My phone line is fairly new (less than a year old) from the home to the pole. However my inside line is probably 30 years old. I had an AT&T technician here a few months ago and he claimed that the lines were fine. I asked him to replace the inside line. There is only one line about 75 feet from the entrance point...easy job. He said there was no need because copper is copper no matter how old, but i disagree. I will call AT&T (notorious for bad service, particularly internet, they would never admit that the lines are the problem).

30 years, eh, anything can happen in 30 years. ISP needs to make sure the Line is correctly connected at there box or pole and it's properly filtered too. Had a buddy with DSL and come to find out the line was getting feedback and interference from a different line and hadn't been properly setup at the pole.

The AT&T people are coming tomorrow Tuesday late afternoon. We'll see how that works out! It has been suggested that I upgrade the firmware (Ver:1.00) in the router, but I have read horror stories about that. It appears to work sometimes and to wreck havoc others.  I had to call D-LINK to help me set it up originally and I am not ready to do that again! What is your gut feeling about it? I trust your judgement.

Lets see if ATT can make sure there lines into the house and to the modem are good, filtered and set up well first. Might ask them to make sure the modem is good too or ask for a new one.

The only things that FW updates is the following:
¤ Fixed Google browser can’t upload language pack.
¤ Fixed WLAN 5G LED behavior.
¤ Fixed Clone MAC address issue in DHCP mode.
 ¤ Added syslog feature.

So not sure if updating would fix anything. Let me review the router settings with you on TV then after all that and if your getting disconnections, then we'll update and I'll walk you thru. There is a FW update procedure outlined in the sticky in the forum you can review.

Remember, your modem logs displayed some LCP entries which are related to the ISP modem and ISP system. I feel it's there problem first. Keep us posted.

The system was down when I got home today about 3 PM. My wife tells me it was down all day, but she doesn't know how to reset it. Again, resetting the modem (the lights were on) did not do it. Resetting the router (D-Link) however started the system again.

The following is the modem log:
Fri, 1999-12-31 16:00:46 - Initialize LCP.
Fri, 1999-12-31 16:01:49 - LCP is allowed to come up.
Fri, 1999-12-31 16:01:53 - PAP authentication success
Fri, 1999-12-31 16:01:55 - Send out NTP request to time-b.netgear.com
Tue, 2012-01-10 15:50:01 - Receive NTP Reply from time-b.netgear.com
Tue, 2012-01-10 15:48:05 - Router start up
Tue, 2012-01-10 16:43:29 - Administrator login successful - IP:192.168.0.2
Tue, 2012-01-10 16:44:29 - LCP down.
Tue, 2012-01-10 16:45:40 - Initialize LCP.
Tue, 2012-01-10 16:45:40 - LCP is allowed to come up.
Tue, 2012-01-10 16:45:43 - PAP authentication success
Tue, 2012-01-10 16:51:36 - Administrator login successful - IP:192.168.0.2

The T&T guy has not arrived. He called and said that my service order was not gievn to the right person. He works in manholes; however, he is driving over to take a look. I can;t count the ways AT&T has screwed up!

If all fails, I'll have you walk me through the upgrade (Not sure what you mean by TV). I am leaning towards returning the router Saturday.

Need to find out what LCP means. Is that coming from the Modem ISP side or between the modem and router.

TV=teamviewer.com

Like to have a review of your router settings before updating FW. Keep me posted.

This is not the first time i've heard ATT messing things up. I wouldn't be surprised if this issue is on there side.
Have a buddy in OK who went to hell before ATT tech found out there lines were not set up and his DSL line was 9000ft beyond the speed package he was paying for. They finally got it cleared up and connected to a different trunk box. They kept saying it was the router or modem. I had him play directly with the modem one nite and bam, same problem. Took a tech that would listen to my buddy after we troubleshot everything. Even a new modem from DLink had problems. I've very leary of ATT.

Hope this is not the case. I would ask to make sure your lines are in the required limit from there hubs.

Keep us posted. Here to help.
