Windows 7 computer does not detect other XP PCs on Network
« on: March 27, 2011, 10:51:00 AM »

I am about to buy a Netbook from HP with windows 7 Starter.
But a few days back when I tried to connect my friend's laptop to my network using WiFi ,it accessed the Internet but did not detect any other XP computers on the Network neither could I ping them nor could I access their shared folders. Please help me access them.. Please show any screenshots if you can  :)

2)And What is N Draft?? and how is it different from WiFi-N?

3)And can I set up Guest Network so that I can give the connected computers Internet access but no               Shared Folder access..

THanks in advance

When you first set up the Win 7 machine you probably chose Home as the Network type and then set up a Homegroup, this is what is keeping you from seeing the XP machines.  You can either leave the Homegroup and not be in one or choose Work as the Network type and you will se the XP Machines.

Draft-N is what the specification was called before final approval of the Specs by the IEEE board.  When the specs became final and the hardware met the spec requirements theycall in WIF-N.

The Guest Zone does exactly that allows for Internet access, but no access to the machines that use the main Network connection.

I think you just need to change the work group name on the XP machine. Dave's answer would still work, because the default workgroup for XP is the default one for Window7 when it's set as a Work Network. When its set to home, I think its called "Homegroup". So just change the Workgroup name on the XP machine to "Homegroup" and you should be set. Either way would work though.

HomeGroups are a new thing in Windows7, makes for sharing between Windows7 machines easier, but is a pain for non-7 machines.  The default Workgroup name is still Workgroup.

Forums are like dinner tables. When it's quiet, that is usually a good sign. No noise=no complaints.

Here is an easier method to work around connecting to XP Machines under windows 7:

Open network and sharing center, click change advanced sharing settings, Turn off password protection to make it easier while connecting with other windows 7 machines, and make sure file sharing is enabled... now here's the key part, windows XP will not except blank passwords for network connection. All you need now is to set a password for the user account that is being used. The network group isn't a factor here at all, you can use \\*IP Address or network name* (example \\192.168.0.100 or \\*username*-PC) when you click the start menu and run or the search for windows vista and 7. If you wish to share folders under windows 7, go to the folder you want to share and right click and properties to get to the security tab and make sure to add users in the permissions or even more simple, add *Everyone* and set permissions that way. Now you shouldn't have any issues with file sharing with other OS's other then windows 7.

As long as the everyone group is added to the share with read access you don't even need an account to access the share.

Sorry I wasn't talking about group, it's permissions, and yes you still need an account to access, without account and password, windows XP can't access.

None of the above ways work........ :( BTW I was in hospital for the last 3 weeks thanks to brain malaria....so I could not reply to your posts.

As for the problem:
1- @davevt31 I left the homegroup but still the same.....
2- @Sean1982 I want no file sharing issues with any of the OS including 7 and XP.......bcoz it defeats the      whole purpose of networking and file sharing. Thanks anyway though...:)
3- @Hard Harry I will try out ur suggestion soon (within 6 hrs)

I know you people have been working hard for this issue but this problem is now very consistent in every house....So I think its better we work out a solution soon.
Kudos to u guys.....
And FurryNutz u ve 2908 posts and in level 11 Woah!!!!!

Open the Network and Sharing Center on the 7 machine(s).  Where you see it saying Home Netowrk, click that and a box will open up.  Choose Work Network and you should see the XP machines.

Did that already.I have already choosen Work Network...but still nothing crops up..although in the XP when i choose "View Workgroup Computers" this Win7 computer's name shows up but when i double click it nothing happens.
In the Win7 computer
When I type "XPqwerty" (the xp computer's name). It says cannot find the computer on the network......

BTW this is not a win7 starter as i told earlier but win7 ultimate......

Double check these settings using the Advanced Sharing Link in the Network and Sharing center.
Turn Network Discovery ON
File and Printer Sharing ON
Public Folder Sharing I have OFF
Media Streaming is OFF
128 Bit encryption
Password protected sharing is OFF
Allow Windows to manage homegroup connections
