Title: DCS-5020L - Need help setting static IP
Post by: drexellake on December 30, 2013, 11:41:58 AM
I have two cameras DCS-930L and DCS-5020L.  The IP on both keeps changing several times per day causing disconnects from viewing and D-ViewCam.  When I go into network settings and change to static I lose connectivity to both.  This is on Windows 7 connecting to a wireless Motorola Surfboard cable modem and access point.

Camera: 192.168.0.177
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
Primary DNS Server: 192.168.0.1

Any help would be appreciated.

Joe

Added Google open DNS 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and they connect now, but even when set to Static the IP's change causing a disconnect in D-ViewCam for both cameras.  Woke up with an IP conflict on my laptop.

I've had this home network in place for a few years and never had problems with my other devices.  I use a ROKU, cell phone, PC, Laptop, and tablet on this network which allows up to 10 connections.

Rather than using Static IP addresses, I recommend reserving the IP addresses through your router. In fact, you should consider reserving the IP address (on your router) for all networked devices on your LAN to maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.

Thanks...  I'll try that tonight.  Next will be figuring out how to use the D-ViewCam software.  I have the .pdf manual, but still need help. Of course I'll save that for another thread.

Happy New Year!

You can consider this resolved.  Thanks again for your help.

##Edit##  IP on the 5020L changed again last night some time even when reserved on the router.  I've noticed that the 5020L is bay far more problematic than the 930L I have which stays connected and has never sent false motion alerts.  The 5020L also sends alerts when it changes from night to day.

I planned on buying more cameras, but so far out of two camera's I've called tech support 5 times and two weeks later I'm still having problems.  I think more documentation would be great since so much is left to the imagination or the hopes that the buyer is an IS wiz.  ???

I obviously have to get this IP issue resolved in order to use D-ViewCam software, or it's all a waste.

If an IP address is reserved on the router for the DCS-5020L, there are only a limited number of things that could cause the IP address not to stick:

It's always best practice to allow the router to perform the role of central IP management for all devices on your network to avoid potential conflicts.

If an IP address is reserved on the router for the DCS-5020L, there are only a limited number of things that could cause the IP address not to stick:

  • Make sure the DCS-5020L is set to DHCP in the web UI under SETUP > Network Setup > LAN Settings. Failing to do this can cause the IP address to change
  • Make sure other devices do not have a static IP address set to the same value that's being reserved for the DCS-5020L. This can cause a conflict that can result in the camera dropping off the network
  • Make sure the reserved IP address falls within the IP range established for your router. For example, if your router is using the IP range of 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.40, then a good IP address would be 192.168.0.10 (i.e. don't use 192.168.0.90)

It's always best practice to allow the router to perform the role of central IP management for all devices on your network to avoid potential conflicts.

I've checked those things and everything is correct.  I set my DCS-933L to 192.168.0.10 and the DCS-5020L to 192.168.0.20 last night.  The 5020L was 192.168.0.105 this morning.  I checked the router settings and .20 was no longer reserved, so I reserved .105 about 20 minutes ago. Only time will tell.

The 5020L came on and recorded some fireworks last night, so at least I have the D-ViewCam configured correctly.  But it doesn't do any good if the camera disconnects due to IP change.  I recently returned a DCS-933L that sent false alerts all day long when it randomly changed from day to night even when there was no change in lighting and it was pointed at a blank wall. I tested it by facing it toward a lamp and turn it off and on.  It would send me an alert email each time.  I'm staring to wonder if this may be causing the IP to change somehow.  Losing confidence fast, but I would like to hang it out and get this working.

You can try a different IP address other than "20" to exclude the possibility of an unknown device or circumstance that's conflicting with the DCS-5020L. I own the DCS-5020L, DCS-931L, and DCS-932L and haven't had any IP address issues. Out of curiosity, what router make/model do you own?

. . . sent false alerts all day long when it randomly changed from day to night even when there was no change in lighting and it was pointed at a blank wall. All D-Link cameras with Night Mode will send an email alert during the transition between Day and Night Mode. That's a request that we've put in to have addressed. Many of the newer cameras and more recent firmware updates have added what the change logs call "[Bug Fix] Refine Day/Night mode switching judgment", which users have noted has reduced the frequency of false Day/Night transitions during subtle changes to lighting. The IP address flipping should not have any impact on email alert triggering or Day/Night mode transitioning, as these functions occur within the camera and are independent of network connectivity.

Lost you there for a while.  I tried cleaning up the routing table because one of my devices has an IP that is one letter and character off from another, or there was an incorrect entry.  One MAC ended in :B2 for the camera and another :B3.  Knowing me it was an entry error on my part.  So while trying to clean up I disabled some MACs, then I lost all Internet access.  Not the only thing working is the PC I have hardwired to the router.  I reset the router and added the MAC's back under Wireless access to Allow but still nothing is connecting.

I have a Motorola Surfboard SBG6580.  I also reset wireless to defaults under the admin account, no go.

Should have added, I can connect to the wireless from other devices but not to the Internet.  I'm running the Motorola setup wizard now.

Wonderful way to spend the New Year.  Reinstalling fixed nothing.  The documentation has very little troubleshooting info, and Motorola support is closed today.  To make matters worse my wife can't watch her Korean drama which has me in hot Kimchee.

OK I'm back up, but I had to add each wireless device manually by MAC to get them back.  No idea why.  I did find out I removed the WAN MAC, so that probably caused the disconnect.  Definitely a learning experience.  The only devices I'm going to make static are cameras.

I'm glad you solved the camera connectivity issues. I suggest you post your D-ViewCam questions on the appropriate board: D-ViewCam (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?board=156.0)

Thanks again for helping.  I think I actually answered my own questions while working on the connectivity issues.  I'm still having issues connecting from Android devices, but I see another post with others having the same problems.  Happy New Year.

Spoke too soon.  The 5020L disconnected again.  Taking it back to Best Buy tomorrow.  No way I should be spending this much time setting a camera up.

The 930L rarely disconnects, and when it does it's only for a couple seconds.  The 5020L disconnects and requires a wired connection to set up after it disconnects. Even had it reserved by MAC.  Never comes back on it's own.

Given what you describe, it sounds as though something may be wrong with the camera. If you have a physical store where you can swap-out your camera, then perhaps that would be the safest course of action. Post back and let us know how things work out!  ;)

Swapped it out and so far this one setup much easier and appears to be working.  It will take some time before I know if the IP address problem is resolved.

I found out that the other one disconnected every time I changed it to range extender mode. After spending 30-40 minutes setting it up from scratch on cat 5 several times.  Would not connect wireless using the setup software.  This one didn't either, but when I changed it to wireless in the admin console it took first try.  I'm going to let it sit a while before moving it to its location.

I'm glad everything seems to have stabilized. From the before and after description of your setup experience, it definitely sounds like something was going on with the original camera. The setup should run very smoothly and the camera shouldn't have been losing connectivity the way you've described with DCS-5020L #1.

Checking in.  The IP's remain unchanged so far.   I set the DCS-5020L to use as a range extender and the camera lost connectivity just as the one I returned did. The only way to get it back on the network is to connect via cable.

I don't understand why it's doing this as there is only one MAC address on the camera and I'm using the same ID as my network.

Did you try using the extender and creating a different network ID?   :-\

Not yet.  I thought of it, but the DCS-933L I returned worked using my current network ID so I figured this one would/should too.   I'll give it a try. Seems like an awful lot of configuration and tinkering to get these to work right. Would be fine if this were my hobby.  ;D

If it's okay with you, I would like to move this thread to the DCS-5020L forum, perhaps other users can offer additional support.

Does it work in the same room as the router?

Or Same symptoms?

No, it disconnects when I use the range extender mode not matter where it is.  I also added a DCS-931L yesterday and it too disconnects when setting to extender mode.   My laptop disconnected last night and even though it shows the wireless the error is cable unplugged when the NIC for wire is disabled.

Must be the router after I tried configuring static IP's and MAC in wireless access control.

Motorola Surfboard SBG6580.  I reset to factory defaults and everything works except range extender mode.  When I set the DCS-931L to extender mode it cuts the DCS-5020L off the network.  I've used the default dlink and my LAN setup, tried setting from both of these cameras.  I also lose my static IP settings when I set the extender mode.

Hey all, my first post on here :) HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Had to install a couple of D-Link cameras to my house due to unruly Kiwis across the road, as we were away for Xmas.

Could access both cameras fine through D-Link Lite on the mobile, and got plenty of email notifications through my phone too!!

As I installed them 4 days before Xmas, I didn't get time to set up the D-View Cam settings.

I have a DCS-931L over looking front garden which has worked flawlessly (during daytime as no night mode)

But my second camera - a DCS-5020L, works fine over the net, but when I tried to set it up in the D-View Cam software, it isn't even listed, have tried auto connect and it wont detect it.

I am running D-View-Cam version 3.6.0

I have been on D-link web site and downloaded the latest version, but its still not listed when trying to set it up.

I have tried to add this camera i.e. "settings/system settings/camera/insert" and inserted the correct name, IP address, port, user name, password etc. Under "Model" the DCS-5020L is not listed so tried the auto detect to no avail. Keep getting the following:- "Inconsistent device model - do wish to continue" I click yes and I get "Cannot connect to device, please check network settings"

Any help would be much appreciated

Buddyboy

You'll need to add it manually by IP address.  In the Camera tab use "Insert" add the IP, admin password, and model. I have to add all of my camera's in this way.

You'll find that most of the configuration and setup software doesn't work like it should.  Lots of manual setup and config to do with both the setup software and DviewCam.
