Title: DIR-655 non-xtreme version
Post by: matti on December 21, 2008, 05:20:31 AM
Hi,

I recently bought a DIR-655 from a UK online store. I was expecting the router to be the DIR-655 xtreme N but upon opening up the package, the box that the router is packaged in has no mention of 'Xtreme N' anywhere, instead it has 'DIR-655 Wireless N Gigabit Router' written across it. Can anyone clarify whether this is a different model of the DIR-655? Or did d-link re-brand it to Xtreme N recently and this is maybe an old packaging? Stats on bottom of the box: H/W version: A3   Model No: DIR-655  UPC code: /B

Thanks, Matti

It's just the product line thats called 'Xtreme'. The 655 is part of that productline. So no worries, you have not bought a downgraded router. The product or productline naming is only marketing, so don't get all upset or go ranting about 'misleading' consumers, marketing is all about making you believe it is the best product ever. You've got a mind of your own, use it   ;)

Thanks for the quick reply. No I wasn't ranting in any way, If it was an inferior model I was simply going to return it and buy the Xtreme version. But since they are the same, there's no need  ;D

Thanks, Matti

Just to be sure... we have seen quite some hefty, irrational repsonses from co-users about these things.

Just to clarify, the marketing for the Wireless N on the UK website doesn't mention Shareport, whereas the Xtreme N marketing on the US site says it is Shareport enabled.

So if I buy a Wireless N DIR-655 router in the UK, can I update the firmware so I can use Shareport? Or do I need to make sure I get the Xtreme N US version?

Thanks

Firmware 1.21EU supports shareport which can be downloaded from from the UK D-Link site. However this may depend on the hardware revision.

???
Firmware 1.21EU supports shareport which can be downloaded from from the UK D-Link site. However this may depend on the hardware revision.

Thanks for the response, but what do you mean by 'this may depend on the hardware revision'?

There is no differece between US models and European models (on hardware level).
You can run all firmwares on every model. The EU versions of the firmware add Euro languages and possibly in the 1.31 EU version (if it is made available) the USB 3G option will be available (not in current on).

Remember:

Shareport enabled firmwares: 1.2x and up
Shareport application version 1.14: firmware 1.2x
Shareport application version 1.10: firmware 1.3x

The 1.14 / 1.10 order is no typo.

I did wonder that EddieZ, but it's kinda confuses you when going through the UK site as it asks you to select the revision you have. A1 doesn't have 1.21EU available when you look at the available firmware.

Have a look http://www.dlink.co.uk/cs/Satellite?c=Product_C&childpagename=DLinkEurope-GB%2FDLTechProduct&cid=1197319392680&p=1197318962147&packedargs=OuickLinksParentID%3D1197318962147%26locale%3D1195806691854&pagename=DLinkEurope-GB%2FDLWrapper (http://www.dlink.co.uk/cs/Satellite?c=Product_C&childpagename=DLinkEurope-GB%2FDLTechProduct&cid=1197319392680&p=1197318962147&packedargs=OuickLinksParentID%3D1197318962147%26locale%3D1195806691854&pagename=DLinkEurope-GB%2FDLWrapper)

That's strange, since A1 one only differs from A2 with regard to the LEDS used....

You could check with one of the Dlink techs through a PM, but to the best of my knowledge there are no other differences and will 1.x and 1.3x work fine on A1

That's what I thought too, expect if you look very carefully at the bottom of the US DIR-655 product page, in tiny tiny little letters it says:

"SharePort upgrade is available for the hardware versions A2, A3, A4."

So presumably, A1 can not do Shareport. More than just the LED's....

Also, apparently A1 and A2 are not "Green" devices as it also says:

"D-Link Green references contained herein apply to Hardware version A3 or later."
