Windows Index and Trash not seeing my 343
« on: October 22, 2009, 09:57:16 PM »

I have a JBOD array in my 343, and it mounts fine. (Though it's a lot slower than I would like.) However, the drive isn't listed in the drives that Windows Index offers to index. Also, the trash can doesn't see it; things get deleted right away, without a stay in the recycle bin. Did I do something wrong -- with Permissions, say -- when I set it up?

I'm pretty sure that Windows won't index remote drives by default because of the resource conflict with concurrent users.  (Imagine how you'd feel if someone was hogging your bandwidth to index their favorite folders on a network share that you don't care about.)  However, Microsoft has issued a patch for your use case.  Try searching for "Windows Desktop Search: Add-in for Files on Microsoft Networks", and let us know if it works  ;)

(As far as a "network recycle bin", it looks like you're out of luck.)

Thanks for the tip, Rocketman. Alas, Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom, decided not to support that add-on in Windows 7, and you can guess which OS I use.
Can you happen to think of a work-around for the Trash issue, aside from file recovery utilities when needed? I have a lot of important stuff on the drive, and I'd hate to think that they might be gone forever with one mistaken mouse click.
Much obliged.
