How to setup SB6183 with DIR-655 on Comcast
« on: September 05, 2015, 09:35:49 AM »

Comcast says my old modem (surfboard 5101) has reached end of life and is no longer supported. I was forced to get a new modem. I now have the Motorolla SB6183 and cannot get the DIR-655 to work with it. I really don't know everything about setting it up, and everything I try does not work. I've spent about 3hrs now failing, googling, and failing more. With my old modem, I remember I had it up and running right away, but I don't know what I did.

So, here's where I stand. SB6183 works.  With just the SB6183 connected to my PC, I can get on the internet just fine. But, when I connect the ethernet cable from the modem, to the router, and router to my PC, I get nothing. The cables are connected exactly the same as they were with my old modem. The auto-setup in the router doesn't detect an internet connection. Trying to manually configure it is where I get completely lost because I don't understand what some of the terms used are, or where to find that information.

Can somebody give me a step-by-step tutorial on how to make this work, or link me to something that will? I am at the point where I am ready to return the SB6183, ditch the DIR-655, and just get a modem with WIFI router built in.

Thank you for your help.

Try swapping lan cable between tur modem and router.
Set manual WAN port speed from auto to 1000mb.

What Fw version is loaded?
Has a factory reset been performed?

I've tried swapping cables with no luck.
I'll try your other suggestion, and I will have to check the firmware. I do know that the firmware has never been updated since I bought the DIR-655, so I will definitely look into that as well.
Yes, I have reset multiple times when trying different things found by googling.

Thank you for your response and helpful info / suggestions. I'll report back.

Firmware version was 2.10. I updated to 2.11. Still cannot get it to work.

I do not know where to change the WAN port speed.

My ISP is Comcast, and I read somewhere online that you set it up with Dynamic IP (DHCP) settings. Is this correct? Those are the instructions I am following in the DLink manual. I've tried Static, but don't quite understand where I get the info from for the settings.

Also, is there some sort of procedure that I need to follow when trying to configure the router? Like, Power Cycle modem first, then power cycle router, enter settings, power cycle something else, reboot PC? What is the order that I am supposed to be doing this, if any?

Again, thank you for your help.

You need to use DHCP under setup/internet/manual/connection type.

WAN port speed is under Advanced/Advanced Networking.

Power OFF all devices. Power ON the ISP modem first, then router, then PC or you can reboot the PC.

You maybe hitting the upper speed limits on Rev As. I know they connect at 300Mb rates, however thruput is different and being a bit older, may not get that rate. Also depending on your wireless devices as well.

What modes are you using on the 655?
Wired speeds to spec?
