Extending Range, But No Internet
« on: July 26, 2018, 11:04:25 AM »

Hi All,

I've been struggling to set up my DAP-1650.  I've successfully gone through the wizard and set it up properly, choosing my network that I want to extend.  The Status page shows all the proper info.  But when I connect to the 1650's network with any device (have tried several laptops and phones), I can connect but do not have internet.  Switching back to the original network that I'm trying to extend, I can verify that there is internet access.  Just not through the 1650's network.

I'm happy to provide any info I'm leaving out that might help troubleshoot.  TIA!

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your DAP? Look at the sticker under the DAP.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the DAPs web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

What is the mfr and model# of the main host router that your trying to extend?
What wireless modes and channels is it using?
Whats the distance between the router and the DAP? Feet?

What wireless mode did you select? (repeater, access point, or media bridge)?

Can you ping your router when connected to the extender?

Can you ping out to the Internet? try ping 4.2.2.2

If you can, try pinging yahoo.com. If you do not get replies, DNS issue.

Did you statically assign your device IP settings or using DHCP from router?

Appreciate the help, as we still haven't gotten this working yet.  Answers inline below:

What Hardware version is your DAP? A1
What Firmware version is currently loaded? 1.03 Have not updated.
What region are you located? North America
What wireless mode did you select? (repeater, access point, or media bridge)? "Extender"
Can you ping your router when connected to the extender? Not sure what this means, but am happy to check if you can provide instructions.
Can you ping out to the Internet? try ping 4.2.2.2 Again, not sure what this means, but will do so if I can get some instructions.
Did you statically assign your device IP settings or using DHCP from router? I'm assuming DHCP as I did not assign anything to the DAP (if you mean the DAP by device")  I did not even see a setting for this in the DLink page for the DAP, and nothing was done in the router settings.

Also, is this device NOT compatible with XP?  I have tried WinXP, Win10 and Apple IOS.  All devices can connect tot he DAP, but XP will not load the dlinkap.local. page (Win10 does).

I've got screenshots of the relavent pages but cannot seem to figure out how this forum allows attachments.

Lets update FW:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=73445.0

Factory reset after the FW is updated then setup from scratch. Let us know...

Also, in addition to Furry's response, dlinkap.local. may not work with XP for some reason. Try "http://dlinkap". And if i remember right in some cases make sure you add the period at the end of local.

To ping, use a Windows computer that is wirelessly connected to the extender.

Click on Start (or tap the windows key on your keyboard). In the "search" or "run" box, type cmd and press enter.

A window will open with a black background and blinking cursor. Type ping 192.168.0.1 and press enter. This is assumed your router has this IP address. If you get 4 "reply for...." messages, it is successful. If you get something else like timed out, general hardware failure, etc, then it failed. If you do not know your router's IP address, type ipconfig and press enter. The IP address next to Default Gateway is the IP address of your router. Ping that IP.

If it passed, try ping 4.2.2.2 and press enter. If it failed, computer cannot get to the Internet at all.

If passed, type ping yahoo.com and press enter. If this fails, something with the DNS settings on your computer. If it passes, You are successfully connected to the Internet and there may be a browser issue.

Thanks GreenBay42.  I followed your instructions (after upgrading the firmware per FurryNutz advice).  I sucessfully ping'd the DAP.

Unfortunately when I ping'd 4.2.2.2 I got:

Pinging 4.2.2.2 with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 4.2.2.2:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

Any advice at this point?  When i went through setup after F/W update, I was able to see and connect to the wifi I'm looking to extend.  Both Power and Internet lights on front of DAP are green.

TIA

Actually need to know if you can ping the local (LAN) IP address of your router. Let me know and we can go from there.

I followed these instructions and was successful:

Type ping 192.168.0.1 and press enter. This is assumed your router has this IP address. If you get 4 "reply for...." messages, it is successful. If you get something else like timed out, general hardware failure, etc, then it failed. If you do not know your router's IP address, type ipconfig and press enter. The IP address next to Default Gateway is the IP address of your router. Ping that IP.

Originallt came up unsuccessful, but used the ipconfig to find router's IP and got that working.  So Router = success , Internet = not a success.

Next steps?

On your computer when connected to the extender, go to Start > Run. Type cmd.  At the prompt type ipconfig /all

You may need to scroll a little. See if the DHCP Server address is the same as the router IP.

Is your DNS servers the same IP as your router? If not just tell me the first 2 octaves (xx.xx.y.y).  You should have 2 addresses there. The first one is the one i need.

Log into the extender. Go to Maintenance > System Check. Under Ping Test, first try the IP of your router. you should get a successful ping. Then try 4.2.2.2 and see what you get.

If it is successful, then there is something going on with the computer.

Do you have ANY kind of filtering on your router that you know of? Schedules? Parental controls, etc?

Wireless.

Do you have your computer connected to the extender via Ethernet?

OK, wireless it is.  The only time I had to connect via ethernet was uploading the new firmware (per on screen instructions).

Bear with the delays, as there is no internet when connected to the DAP, so I have to go back/forth to get you the info you're asking.

No problem on the delay. I'm stuck at my desk for 2 more hours.  :)

OK, that was pretty quick to get results....

DHCP  & Router are same IP (192.168.0.50)
Ping'd 192.168.0.50 successfully.
Ping to 4.2.2.2 "Timed out".

No parental controls on router or any scheduling or what not.
