Dear All I have the two following products.......
a D Link DSL 320 B ADSL Modem and for the WiFi a DIR 855 Wireless N Quadband Router. I have a few questions I need answering in order to get my best set up.

1) Which of the 2 products should have the DHCP set to on?
2) I will require a VPN in order to access my CCTV recorder from iPhone, again what are the best settings for each devise?
3) Will I need to set the DSL modem to bridged mode in order to do step 2?
4) Can someone explain in "Dummies" terms what exactly is Bridged Mode and why may I need to do this?
5) If the DSL 320 is the DHCP server can/do I plug the rest of the network into the DIR 855 ethernet ports or can/do I only plug the rest of the network (Netgear Switch connecting all house Cat6 ethernet ports) into the DSL Modem ethernet connections?
6) If I set the DSL-320B to Bridged mode do I have to input the ADSL ISP settings on the 320 or the 855?
7) Do I set up the VPN settings on the 320 or the 855?

Am I doing this right?

6) If I set the DSL-320B to Bridged mode do I have to input the ADSL ISP settings on the 320 or the 855? Input the DSL account information into the 855 router under setup/internet/manual.
7) Do I set up the VPN settings on the 320 or the 855? On the 855.

Am I doing this right? Make sure Always On is checked.

I also recommend setting up DHCP (Static) reserved IP addresses on the 855 router for ALL connected devices, PCs and phones and such.
Also make sure the Primary and 2ndary DNS are being auto filled in under Setup/Internet/manual.
If you have Advanced DNS Services option, disable it.
Enable DNS relay under Setup/networking.

If you don't have any A or B wireless devices, get up WiFi modes for Single mode or Mixed mode G and N if you have any N supported devices.

If your not using QoS Engine, turn it off.
Set Firewall settings to EndPoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

If your not streaming any video over Wifi, you can turn of WISH.

Enable Multicast Streaming under Advanced/Advanced Networking.

Let us know how it goes.

I finally got round to installing the 320 and the 855 a few weeks back. Thanks for your help.  :) It was quite straight forward to be honest. I installed the 320 first and the IP was 192.168.0.1 when I installed the 855 it moved the 320 to 192.168.1.1 and the 855 got the 192.168.0.1 address and hey presto it was all set up in Bridged mode!
I updated both of firmwares to the latest on the D-Link site.
I now have a slight problem. Every now and then the WiFi seems to drop. I have not checked to see if the internet has dropped also. It is usually happening while I am at work and the Wife (un plugs and re plugs) re boots the 855.
I have the 2.4 SSID for both iPhones and the 5.0 for future use. All Wired computers and TV's have reserved IP addresses.
Any ideas as to why the WiFi keeps dropping? I also noticed that after upgrading my WHS from V1 to 2011 WHS can not configured the router for external communications using UpnP.
Could the WiFi be dropping due to the settings of the WiFi being too high or could there be interference from other items?

What wireless modes are you using on each radio? Try single mode G or Mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz.

Turn off Short GI and extra wireless protection if you have this option.

Any house cordless phones?
Any near by wireless routers?

Sonos (Internet Radio) went off this morning at the usual time but went off after a few mins! It was early so I was still half asleep and didn't have much time to check things out properly!
I didn't check to see if Rako Lighting was working, this is plugged into my HP Switch but works on my iPhone WiFi! The Sonos also works on my iPhone WiFi but is also plugged into the switch!
I unplugged the 855 then re booted and everything went back to normal.
I figure that there is some problem with the 855 loosing Adsl with the 320! If or when it happens again I will check to see if I have a WiFi Ssid on the iPhone!

Are there any logs in the 855 and DSL modem indicating any disconnections or related to that? Are Sonos and Rako separate internet devices? They run wired or wireless to the 855? Can you give us a semi graphical layout of your network system?
Like: DSL Modem>855>HP Switch<>devices?
(This is how mine is set up.)

Try to helps us out out you have things set up.

I have an HP switch too, love it.

Keep us posted.

I will work on the Logs at the weekend and get them posted.
Here is the set-up

D-Link 320 > D-Link-855 > HP Switch > 3 Com Switch. All Devices are plugged into the Switches (Rako, Sonos, WHS Server, Netgear Skype Phone, 2 x Sony TV's, 2 x Humax Freesat PVR's CCTV DVR & 3 x PC's) with fixed IP addresses. The Sonos and Rako then have there own wireless systems and are controlled by the 2 iPhones and iPad. iPhones are on the 2.5ghz ssid and the iPad is on the 5.0ght ssid network.

I did see in the instructions for the HP switch it should have had it's own IP address, but it dosent appear on my list of devices on the DIR 855?

I hope this makes sense.

If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
The HP switch depending on the model, normally don't require to have a IP address as they are passive in that regards. They are true plug and play devices, just turn on and they are a go. What model HP switch do you have?

Your setup seems good and is preferred that way and should work well.

Some things to try on the 855:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.

The D-Link 320 B is the ADSL modem and the D-Link DIR855, which is bridged to the modem (Modem IP is 192.168.0.1 and the DIR 855 is 192.168.1.1).

There are 2 switches on the network, I forgot to mention this second one.

The HP is HP V1810-24G 24 Port Gigabit Switch and the other is a 3 Com HP V1405-24 24 Port 10/100 Switch.

I will get back with the other stuff when I get home and have a play!

Log looks good here. Nothing abnormal.

As far as the date goes, Setup an NTP server using time.nist.gov for the address. You can leave the DST check box unchecked as any DST saving times will be adjusted by that server address. This will keep your router date and time on track.

Were you able to set up reserved IP addresses on the router for your devices.

Let us know if you need more help. Teamviewer is a good thing.  ;)

Will Teamviewer help as this only seems to be intermittent!

It happened again last night and I had to re boot the 855. The local network was working on both SSID's, i.e. I could see the Humax from the iPad on the 5.0ghz SSID and the iPhone on the 2.5 SSID.

It is the internet that keeps dropping and the only thing I could see from the Logs this morning was the 855 was once again 3 days behind on the system date!

It will help me review your router settings to see if there is anything that needs configuration.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
