Title: Thanks D-link for spamming my email with 3000 emails a 5 mb!!!!
Post by: fableman on May 29, 2013, 03:21:21 PM
The camera was looping alert emails with attached motion detected for 1 day until i noticed it around 3000 emails 5mb each!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The camera was possile to log into but very slow responding and the picture where frozed.

Iam still deleting emails and I cant recive any other email cos this messing up my mail account...!!!!! I so angry at d-link and the bad support, bad camera and no new firmwares and all just crap!!!! see my other fail reports and not a single comment from d-crap!

Have you tested the motion detection settings to make sure they were not too sensitive? (i.e. are these the same settings you've used in the past or are you setting up motion detection with the DCS-2310L for the first time?)

It would help if the original poster told us what settings did this, was it PIR or video motion detection, and was this a new or changed setup.

I find it's helpful to send only small email alerts (still pictures or small low resolution videos), and save those 5MB recordings to local storage only. And I've set up a separate email account to receive alerts, so they don't overwhelm my regular email in case I get a lot of events.  I would never set up to send 5MB videos to my regular email account (5MB is not the default size, it's the largest possible size, but the camera will let you set up to email 5MB videos to yourself if that's what you really want, this poster perhaps didn't consider what he was really asking for).

It's important to test new settings without waiting an entire day to see if they're detecting too much.  Getting motion detection set right outdoors is tricky, where there can be a lot happening.  The default video motion detection sensitivity that was on the camera out of the box was too sensitive for my location, I had to turn it down.  I have noticed the PIR seems too sensitive for outdoors, so I'm either not using it at all, or using it for recording to local SD storage only.  The DCS-942L camera has 3 sensitivity settings for PIR, it's too bad this one doesn't.

It's also important to get the best setup for motion detection, and that starts with camera placement. It's best to put it where there isn't too much motion you don't care about, like passing traffic on a busy road, or tree limbs that may move in the wind, and also best to place it where sun will never hit the lens directly (this means if you want to face it where the sun rises or sets, try to place it under a roof or someplace where the sun won't shine in it, or at least face it down toward the ground and don't include sky in the picture).  You can overcome passing traffic with video motion selection that excludes the public road, but PIR has no settings for direction, so if your camera is near a road, you should plan on not using the PIR.  Then, you should experiment with the sensitivity settings (for video motion detection), including walking in the motion detection area to see how it detects motion, and also see that it doesn't trigger too often (including in different conditions like day, night, sunny, windy days).

Even so, I still get too many alerts from mine at times.  Lightning storms generate lots of video motion detection. Sunny, windy days are also a problem, because I have some tree shadows on the ground where mine is installed, and moving shadows tend to create a lot of alerts on some days.

And one other thing.. the camera detects motion each time it switches from day to night mode and back. It would be nice if it didn't send alerts for this.

After my previous post questioning the other users setup, I think my DCS-2332L started doing this same thing to me. I already have a DCS-2310L, and decided to get a DCS-2332L also for a location I can't easily run ethernet to.  The 2 cameras seem to have very similar firmware (I've updated my DCS-2332L to 1.01; my DCS-2310L still has 1.00).

I was changing my event definitions.  I've already noticed after doing this the DCS-2310L sometimes sends me old pictures, from the previous motion event instead of the current one.  Then each one after that is the picture of the previous event instead of the current one, so I get all pictures eventually, but late. Rebooting the camera always corrected this, so I try to remember to reboot after changing event definitions.

Today, I have event 1 set to send me email from profile 1 using video motion detection, and event 2 to save video to the SD card from profile 1 using PIR detection (I just got the DCS-2332L, and want to compare the effectiveness of these 2 methods, so in the next few days I'll see if I get better detection and less false alerts from video or PIR).  I noticed when using PIR, the recording seems to always be the maximum seconds. With video detection, recording stops after motion stops.  But with PIR, it appears recording always continues for the maximum time set.  I had this set to 45 seconds, and decided to shorten it to 30.  I changed this in the event definition, possibly while it was actually recording.  After I did this, I noticed I was getting email event notifications from event 1 every 10 seconds (I have this set to wait 10 seconds after an event before the next event can be sent).  There was no apparent motion, yet I continued getting emails every 10 seconds.  Fortunately I noticed this right away. I rebooted the camera, and the emails every 10 seconds resumed.  I turned off the events, rebooted, and finally the emails stopped. I then turned them back on.  So far, it's not sending any more emails when there's no motion.

It seems like the firmware is buggy when event settings are changed, it appears it's a good idea to reboot after changing events.

Here's a section of my log file.  The continuous emails were happening (except during reboot) from 20:39 to 20:47.  After the 20:39:41 motion trigger, I don't see motion stopped until 20:51:32, after a reboot. Is this why I was getting continuous emails (every 10 seconds) during this time?  Note that I was using the setup menus at this time including changing the motion detection area at 20:38:12, maybe me using the setup menus caused the camera to lose track of the motion detection state? I don't think there was any actual motion present during most or all of these 10 minutes. It appears I changed event 2 at 20:41:51 before motion stopped, and by 20:43:39 I noticed a flood of emails all with pictures that looked alike except for the timestamp, and rebooted to try to get this to stop.  At 20:47 I turned off both motion events, then rebooted at 20:52:05, but maybe that wasn't necessary because of the motion stopped message right before that.

This is a followup to my comment from yesterday that I was getting continuous emails for about 10 minutes.

Now, I have a different possible cause.  The same thing happened today, at about the same time of day, for about the same length of time (from about 20:42 to 20:48). Today, I wasn't using the setup menus, or viewing images, or anything.  Just like yesterday, this happened shortly after the IR cut filter switched to night mode. The pictures from this time of day are quite grainy or snowy.  Maybe the noise in the picture triggers the motion detection. Then, as the sky gets darker, the image gets darker and the motion detection ends.  I have not noticed any of my other cameras (1 DCS-2310, 1 DCS-942L, 2 DCS-930L) doing this.  I'll try changing settings to prevent this.  I'll start with setting the IR cut filter to switch at a lower light level and see if that helps.  Next, I'll try lowering the motion detection sensitivity (currently 75% on 10%).  Or, I'll try using just PIR for detection.

Here's my log from today showing lots of motion detection around this time, including continuous from 20:42:51 to 20:47:58. I can't see any motion in any of the images in my email, except for the grain (snow, noise) in the pictures.

The next day... I did not get any motion detection emails today at dusk... hoping they don't come back.
