DGL-4500 or Netgear Rangemax WNDR3700
« on: April 29, 2010, 10:04:15 AM »

Hey,

I currently have a Belkin F5D8231-4, and it doesn't work with two xbox 360's. I'm looking for a replacement router. I narrowed it down to two routers. The first of course being the DGL-4500 and the other the Netgear Rangemax WNDR3700. I've read about the netgear and it seems to have better ratings then the DGL-4500. So I'm stuck. Which do you think is better? And is "Gamefuel" really worth it?

Thanks.

I want to know the same, I'm looking for a router, Maybe the DGL 4500 is better but with this firmware issue it completly not worth it... , well there is supposely a fixed downgrading to 1.15v , I wonder if there will be a stable firmware, I don't know why they keep selling it if they have a problem without a fix, it isn't even loyal...or honest...

I have 2 4500s one with v1.15 and the other with v1.22NA, both are great for general use, gaming and wireless. Been playing MW2 for couple of hours right now. Find yourself a cheap on on ebay.

I have both and the WNDR3700 is a much better device.  My DGL-4500 sits in my closet collecting dust...

Well I had my two 4500's in active service up until fw ver 1.20 when I decided to switch to a pair of 3700's (one as primary router and one as access point).

The 4500 was fine until the fw fiasco started.  I waited a year for them to fix it and finally gave up.  The biggest problem I had was the frequent lockups and/or resets that kept occuring back then.  I have 9 pc's on my network that automatically backup to two home servers on a daily basis.  With the 4500 one or more of the backups would fail a lot of the time, with the 3700 no problems.

The 4500 has a 400mhz processor while the 3700 has 680mhz so both have plenty of power available for their tasks.  The 4500 has a little over 200mhz wan to lan speed while the 3700 has a little over 400mhz.  The 4500 QOS (gamefuel) is definetely easier to setup than the 3700, but if you have a high speed WAN connection ( I have 50mb up 10 mb down, soon to double) you dont really need QOS anyway and likely won't notice any difference with QOS on or off.  The 3700 has better wireless coverage than the 4500's did (same locations).

All that said, I hope they get a solid 4500 fw pretty soon so I can put my 4500's back in service somewhere else in the family.  Myself, I will stick with the 3700's.

I have two PS3's on my network and they work fine.  They are both hardwired to the 1gb household backbone so if your question was about wireless this doesn't help

What FW version is currently loaded? v1.21NA? This version was not the best and once v1.22NA came out, the 4500 has been great since. Let me know if I can help.

I haven't had good luck with Netgear products.  Without going into too much detail, Netgear screwed me more than once with poor router firmware.

I own two DGL-4500s with multiple Xbox360s at both locations and have never had one minute of trouble with either.  Both connections have been up solid, no reboots or even wireless restarts, for over 90 days now.  FW v1.22NA is about as stable as you're gonna see.

Just don't try loading settings from older firmware into the new firmware, or you may "poison" the router.  Always configure from scratch.

Well I have a Dgl 4500 and I can say its been doing pretty well. People say that the DGL 4500 has issues, all those issues were never proven. I was looking into the 3700, but still haven't made up my mind. but i really I like my 4500 because it has a screen! come on what other router has a screen! & because it gets the job done. Do your research and pick the best router you think will work with you.
