DCS-933L extender not working with DIR-825 router
« on: May 04, 2014, 02:04:35 PM »

Hi

I've been puzzling to get the extender working on my D-Link DIR-825 router.
The DCS-933 extender has been working perfectly on my ISP's wifi/router until one day I decided to change my internet service provider.

Using back my DIR-825 router (with the latest firmware release) I connected my cam back and works just fine.  However, when I enable the extender mode, the green (blinking) LED starts to cycle green - red - green - red.. continuously.  Resetting has no use, tried fixed / dynamic IP, several firmware versions, different channels, etc.  No result.  :'(

I reconnect the device back to my old ISP's router/modem (which is still here as it's not removed yet) as a test -> extender works again, perfectly!!!  I also tried the 'same' settings from the ISP's router (like bgn support, auto bandwidth, same channel, etc.).  I also tried another SSID... briefly, I tried everything but with the extender function enabled the Cam network access is dead if used back with again the DIR-825!

My new ISP modem hasn't any router integrated so the only alternative is back the DIR-825 soon..

I checked the network status on my DIR-825, with cable connected, I get the following:
http://www.smoetje.eu/images_links/UTP_Cable_Connected.PNG
I can properly login, green LED works normally

I checked the network status on my DIR-825, with cable disconnected it goes on the DIR-825 wifi, I get the following:
http://www.smoetje.eu/images_links/Wireless_status.PNG
I cannot login, green LED is flashing between green and red continuously
Like said, it does that only on my DIR-825...

When I check the wireless devices, this line contiuously reappears and disappears (mac is originating from the DCS-933L cam).  http://www.smoetje.eu/images_links/Wireless_status_wifi.PNG

I can only assume, there's some kind of compatibility issue between the DCS-933L and the DIR-825 ???

But if it could be somehow figured out by D-link with a fix, solution, whatver .... would be mostly welcome!

Thanks...

Any status on this?

  • What wireless modes are you using on the main host router?

I'd like to see a comparison of the settings used on the router that works versus the DIR-825. There must be some setting or protocol that's different.

Here's the info:

Hardware Version: B1     Firmware Version: 2.06EU

About the settings on the router on which the extender works fine, it's a little hard. Because it's provided by the internet provider and has limited configuration possibilities via the provider's website.  Except SSID, channel, bandwidth, dmz and a few port forward possibilties, there's not much that can be changed.  Things like dhcp, mac address to ip, .. are quite limited.
I tried several settings on de providers router with the points above and it works ok.
I did the practically test on the dir-825 (other ssid, other channel, 20/40/auto bandwidth, put cam in dmz, ... Nothing.  As soon as. I enable the extender in de 933, the cam cannot be reached anymore with wifi with the dir-825.  Put the cable in, disable extender, disconnect cable and there's the cam back inside the wifi network.

Problem is that I have no idea if there's a way to diagnose the 933 when it occurs, get logs or something like this?

I'll set my 933L up and check this out. I'm curious that maybe in extender mode, that the UI may not be accessible in this mode if the LAN cable isn't used. I haven't used mine as a extender and just camera only. I presume that if in extender mode, the UI should be accessible across the WLAN and LAN...

The 825 has v2.09EU FW however if this is an ISP supplied router, not sure if they'll allow an update. Is the FW UI a D-Link screen or does it display something different?

Can you test the 933L and host router by turning OFF WiFi security temporarily as a test to see what happens? Turn back on after. I use single mode N/ WPA2/AES only and Auto 20/40Mhz channel width on mine.

Thanks

The 825 router is completely mine, I can do what I want with it.  My old providers model/integrated router is more sort of blackbox with minimal configuration like mentioned above.  I wasn't aware of a 2.09eu firmware, the 825 router update notified that the 2.06eu was the lastest version.  I should definitely give this a try...?

Lets try this first...

I'll be damned... it's working!!  ;D

I tried your recommendation and disabled all Wifi passwords.  To my surprise the extender works fine.
So far so good, I re-enable the password and again same issue.

Next thing I tried us use an alternative password (my password always contained a $ sign in it).  So I decided to drop the $ sign in the password as a means of test... and it still works!  Never thought of it in fact that it could've been the password itself...

Funny is that this same password (including $ sign) was used on the provider's modem/router for 1 year + my 933 extender without problems.

Must be a bug somewhere I assume?

Now that it's working I tried a secondary wifi via the extender, using my same (old usual password including $ sign, heavily secured  ;D)

The extender on the 933 seems to emit fine nevertheless...

Possible issue with the 825 FW and this special character. I normally don't use any specialized characters and only in testing do I. I believe this char is supported however being your in the EU region, there maybe differences or just with the current version of FW loaded.

Glad you got it working.

Try that first then turn ON WiFi security and test again with out special characters...The OP was able to get his working.
