DNS-343 RAID5 Read Speeds - Fast enough for Media Server?
« on: April 23, 2010, 05:55:53 AM »

I have two 1.5TB drives in my DNS-343. I'm considering adding two more and implementing RAID 5 on the entire set. My only concern is the read speed for the entire box as a media server. I frequently stream HD video content (Blu-ray rips of 12-20GB per file) across the wired LAN. Will the read speeds be affected by switching to RAID? Will the effects be positive or negative?

From what I've read on this forum, there is a performance hit between standard volumes vs. RAID.  Here is another thread relating to performance with some numbers: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=10912.0
