I've had my DGL-4500 for several years with no problems. About 6 months ago I started noticing that the internet connection would occasionally dip to a point where I couldn't load a web page, and or completely disconnect during the day. To fix this, I would just unplug/replug it to resolve the problem. As time has gone on, the frequency of this problem is now up to several times a day. I'm about ready to throw it out, but thought maybe someone might be able to help me check some settings, etc. I'm connected to COMCAST via their ARRIS TM722 cable modem. Any help or insight would be appreciated. ???

Let us know if anything has changed or helps with this.
Try a factory reset if this happens again.
Also make sure that the ISP cable line going into the modem is in good working condition and the signal levels going into the ISP modem are to spec. You'll need to check with the ISP service for this.
If there are any t.v. cable line splitters on the cable line before the ISP modem, these can reduce the signal going into the modem. Recommended is to have a dedicated cable line into the ISP modem. If a t.v. line splitter is needed use 1 good quality one.
If after all this, you seem to still exhibit connection problems, then you can attempt a FW update.
Keep us posted on how it goes.

THANKS!!
Will do!
-
Dear Furry-
Here's the update: Sorry to say I still have the same problem. How do i update the Firmware?...seems as if that's the next step.
Thanks,
Marc
-
Ok, please review this and follow it for upgrading FW:
FW Update Process (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42457.0)
You'll need to download the FW from the main web site first:
http://www.dlink.com/us/en/support/product/dgl-4500-xtreme-n-gaming-router (http://www.dlink.com/us/en/support/product/dgl-4500-xtreme-n-gaming-router)
Please follow the FW update process for doing this.
I recommend after doing the last factory reset, configure and set up the router from scratch first to see how it works for you. Don't load any saved configuration file.
-
Going to try the Factory Reset before updating the Firmware. Will let you know how it goes- Thanks
-
And one after. Keep us posted. ;)

Dear Furry,
Wanted to give you an update and some good news. My final 2 actions were completed in the following order:
1- Replace the Ethernet cable as you previously suggested.
2- Complete the firmware upgrade as per your instructions.
I don't which of the 2 actions did it, but I've been testing and using the router for the past 5 days with NO Dips, Drops or Disconnects.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!
Marc

Awesome. Glad it's working well for you.
Enjoy.

I was doing some snooping around the other day since i have been noticing the issue as well, and came across this:
http://reviews.cnet.com/routers/d-link-dgl-4500/4505-3319_7-32748872.html
The issue that you have been experiencing come to find out was a known issue from the beginning. If I would have known this from the get go I would have not purchased one. And I am sure that it's been too long for me to ***** about the known issue and try to get them to send me a new one. I have been looking at the Asus RT-AC66U and it is holding the spot at #1 right now for overall performance.
Check out the reviews for the BEST ROUTERS out right now at:
http://reviews.cnet.com/best-wireless-routers/

The issue is not with the 4500. I've never had any issue with mine. Most of the problems seen are external conditions and user configurations of the router.
Also this review 5 years old and out of date. There was one FW version that had problems however was fixed.
CNET is biased and does not offer the best objective reviews. Other web sites have more objective reviews.
THe 4500 is one of the best routers of it's time and still is a good router, specially for gaming.

I used to have the same problem with my 4500. A factory reset and upgrade to the latest firmware fixed it for me. Although it's a pain, beats the hell out of getting disconnected in the middle of a heated match!
-
- What region are you located?
Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
- What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
- What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
- If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/fixing_double_nat.htm) and How NAT Works (http://cognitiveanomalies.com/cisco-nat-how-nat-works/). To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
- Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53008.0)
- For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.
Have you reviewed this?

If you do decide to up date, please follow this:
FW Update Process (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42457.0)
However v1.15 FW is very solid for Rev A1 routers. I recommend that we attempt to help you configure the router better for gaming first before doing any FW udpates.

Hi theres no 192 in the Wan section the Wan ip starts with 82 and my router and modem both start with 192 the modem i have is a netgear which virgin supplied me it has a built in router but the hub has a feature where you can just make it a modem so i put my hub in modem mode well the virgin engineer did so that its just a standalone modem

Am i better off doing a reset then loading my saved configuration file to get my settings back it just seems abit of a hasel writing everything down and all my settings then typing them back in also when i check for the latest firmware on my router theres a little note saying some firmware upgrades may reset your router to factory default settings if this is the case does this mean i don't need to reset the router to factory default settings as the firmware update ill reset them for me
-
You are actually in the UK? Be aware that this model router was not marketed in the EU region and was only an NA region router. Operation in other regions maybe problematic.
If your ok with that, and if you want to upgade, download the FW file directly from D-Links NA site.
-
Yeah am from the UK its worked fine for 6 years until a week ago whats the website for the the NA dlink site so i can get the newest firmware think iv'e already downloaded the newest firmware from the dlink website but don't know if its the NA one unless theres just the one site to get it from

I may try the reseting it if that does'nt work then al try the firmware update its the only two options i have to try and fix this issue where it keeps disconnecting people from the internet if any of this does'nt work then al just stick with my standard d link router or maybes buy a second hand 4500 or the new 5500
-
only reason why the 4500 might disconnect would be interferences, mis-configuration or the ISP modem is not getting service correctly.
