Getting DIR-816L to run at advertized max of 750mbps
« on: May 11, 2015, 10:53:21 PM »

I'm unfamiliar with the "new" wireless ac standard and am wondering how to go about getting it to run at the advertised 750mbps? I'm aware that it is a theoretical maximum, but I want it to be as close to the advertised speed as I can get it. I bought this router today and am overall pleased with it and it appears to work better, overall, than the previous router.

Currently, it is running at 433mbps, I've applied settings that I used on my previous router to get it to run at 300mbps (Which I found on these forums), and that previous router was the DIR-645. I'm using the latest firmware version available (2.06b01), hardware version is B1, and did a factory reset after applying the new firmware.

For my wireless NIC I am using the DWA-582, which has "wireless speeds of up to 867 Mbps", so I do have supporting hardware for the router.

Edit: I would like to point out that I have selected a channel on the 5.0 band that appears to have no overlapping channels or co-channels (According to InSSIDer v3.1.2.1). With my current settings I have tried both mixed mode ac and n and ac only with no difference, so I'm not sure if I am missing something.

Router:
Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

The Next Generation 11AC Wi-Fi – Up to 300Mbps on 2.4Ghz N mode only + 433Mbps on 5Ghz AC mode only. These are separate connection rates between the router and the wireless device only per each radio, and not combined to made one connection speed rate. These are separate connection rates per radio.

Canada.

Now that I think about it, I seem to recall reading that the 750mbps was the speeds of the 2.4 and 5.0 bands added together, but I had read that awhile ago and didn't clue in that this applied to all the AC models.

It applies to ALL dual band model routers N and AC.  ;)

Well, I've been stuck with a single band router for awhile, hence my confusion.  :P

Edit: Is it possible to tell what channel width the 5.0 ghz band is running at?

Use InSSIDer app or something that can scan your wireless configuration and environment. AC modes need 80Mhz, N needs 40 or 20Mhz depending on interferences and other WiFi routers using same channels.
