List of External Drives Supported by DIR-857 USB
« on: June 16, 2012, 02:43:31 AM »

Hi,

Is there a list of supported USB external drives that can be connected to the DIR-857 router?
I bought the DIR-857 router recently and was hoping to connect my WD 1TB USB 3.0 external HD to it for file sharing but the SharePort doesn't see it, also my other WD external USB 2.0 750GB drive cannot bee seen with the SharePort utility.

I can use those external drives when connected directly to my laptop. I am also able to connect USB thumb drives to the router and they can be seen and used, but not the WD external drives (My Passport). Contacted D-link technical support but did not get a useful answer.

Would an update of the Firmware solve this issue? Or is there a list of supported drives?

Router hardware: 1A  - Firmware: 1.0
OS: Windows 7 - SP1 - Browser: Fire Fox 12.0

Thanks for your help

Are these drives formatted clean NTFS?
What version of SP are you running?
Have you reset the router while the drive is connected to see if SP will see the drives?
There isn't any list of drives at the moment.

Thanks for the reply. Yes those drives are NTSF formatted, the first one is a USB2.0 external drive (750GB) and the second one is USB3.0 external drives (1TB), I tried the router reset while the drive is connected but it still cannot be seen by the SharePort. I am only seeing the message: "No USB drives were found on the network".

The SP version is 4.0.082.

:o Updated the Firmware to 1.01 and lost the internet connection, but after some TLC and sweat I am back again (not sure how) and this is how I am sending this post. The WD drive issue is still the same, the SharePort cannot see my external WD drive.

Updating FW will make the router loose internet for a period of time. Thats expected.

If this didn't work then I would presume that your model external HDD is not supported or the case it resides in and the connection isn't. I would try a different model drive, test a friends or buy one at a place with a return policy. If any of those don't work then it's possible your router needs to me RMAd. My 2Tb WD My Book works on mine. However I don't keep it there, it resides on a server PC and is shared out from there. This could be an alternate work around for you as well.

Sometimes I have the same issue. You dont need shareport——it's not necessary if you just want to share your attarched HD at home.
If the router correctly shared your HD by samba in the LAN (just enable the storage option), then Windows can handle this itself. Right click "My computer"——"Map Network Drive"——type the router IP/name like "\\192.168.1.1" or "DIR-857" , then click Browse. Dont click Browse before you type the IP or name. Then you should see your HD in the list, just click it and it will be mapped as a local disk.
The router name DIR-857 is defined in the route admin web "TOOL——GATEWAY NAME", and you can change it.

Thanks for the information. I tried this tip but was still unable to locate the HD on the network. I can locate USB thumb drives when attached to the USB port on the router, but not the WD portable HD. I think for some reason the router cannot identify it, maybe this has to do with the WD firmware.
