Ok so I tried the refresh and it worked so far.

I figured that I was consolidating folders and that’s when it stopped working.

I jumped onto the portal > configuration > Advances > UPNP AV Server > clicked on refresh

funny, i read the user manual and there was a setting drop down but they removed it in 1.06..

so I hit refresh that took a good 10 minutes then I went to bed and when I got up files seem to be working and folders are all there.. I will try more tonight but man 2 hours to refresh is a bit much..

Yeah, the built-in UPnP server is just plain-old slow!

It took about roughly 30-35min. to do a full refresh on my media files and about 2 hours to show up on a UPnP client device on my network (e.g. the 360, another computer, etc.).

I installed Twonky UPnP server on my DNS-323 a couple weeks ago, and, with the same media library, it takes roughly 2-3minutes for a full refresh, and the files show up immediately after that refresh on the other UPnP client devices.  Needless to say, I paid the $29.95 for the Twonky license :-)

Did you need to reinstall linux as well or did you just install Twonky on the existing Linux OS? Does Twonky support .wav files ? Did you need to uninstall the existing media software as well?
Thanks

No, all you need to do install the FONZ Fun_Plug which is a startup script that allows the DNS-323 to run other services, programs, etc. on bootup.  The only one of which you really are concerned with is a telnet service.

Once you've got a telnet service running and listening on the DNS-323, you just download the Twonky installer, point it to the telnet server's address (the address of your DNS-323), and it'll unpack Twonky, install it to a folder on the DNS-323 and add the Twonky service as a startup item in the FONZ Fun_Plug script.

I am not sure if Twonky serves up .wav files, as I have none myself.  You'd have to check their site.

When I was using the DNS-323's UPnP server, I had a helluva time getting any .avi videos to stream correctly.  I tried all kinds of variations on codecs, containers, bitrates, etc. and finally gave up.

Thanks for the response. I will try Twonky on my Linux Laptop first to test .wav files and other functionality

CARB1DE:
use a software like gspot to check what kind of AVI you got.

Per experience all DivX and Xvid with MP3 audio (either CBR or VBR) works fine

If the xbox sees the .AVI, but when you go to play it, it gives out an error message....
take a look at the Folder/File name where the AVI is
try not to use any special Characters (spaces are OK) and make sure that the folder/file name stays under 70 char total.... (I had an issue that AVI would not play if the full path + filename was over 70 chars)

This is the same problem Im having, and with little experience in this im not having any fun :'(

I can see the content through the pc's but not the 360's

the path I have is volume_1/video/tv series/dr who/season 1/ (as an example) since I have only put dr who on there as a test maybe it's the length of the path as described above.

Other thing is that it wont recognise the title of "beyonce" or some of the artists which in the subfolders there are no characters etc, but it just displays them as "other"

I tried the twonky then discovered you need the "telnet" and other stuff but stopped at the part where the telnet did not work after reading a post warning you can brick the unit...... :-\

By the way im using 2 x maxtor 250gb in a Jbod configuration, like I say totally new to all this so if anyone can give me a pointer or another way to start, I dont mind starting fresh, formatting etc I'd be very grateful.
