DNS-320 - Noise on hard drive disk
« on: March 08, 2017, 12:22:24 AM »

Hello,

On my NAS DNS-320, I have 2 disk (2TO barracuda) and one of my disk is making noise.
I can'tfind out which one it is, and on the admin website, no SMART or any errors.

How can I find out the HDD which is making Noise ?

I thought to stop NAS, remove one HDD, start the NAS, and do the same with the other disk to run the NAS with only one disk at the time to find the noisy disk. But becasue or replication / rebuild, how can I do it whithout any loss of data ? What is the best way ?

Thank you !

Did this noise just start? Or was it there from the beginning?

First check that it isn't a vibration issue. Shut it down. Open it up and check that everything is properly bedded down. Then restart it.

If it is still noisy, you'll have to seek further advice.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your DNS? Look at the sticker behind or under the device.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the DNSs web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Can you describe the sound? High pitched whining sound or clicking?

You can take one of the drives out of the DNS after turning it fully OFF. Then turn it back on and listen. If you don't hear anything, turn it back off and put in the other drive and pull out the first drive. Turn on and listen.

I would add, make sure that you put them back in the slot you took them from.

Provided you remove and replace them while the unit is powered off there shouldn't be any problem with the RAID array wanting to rebuild (it will show degraded with one disk missing).  I would also suggest that you do a full backup of your data first - it is better to be safe than sorry.

Hello
I am deeply sorry I completely forgot (maybe because I did not receive any update by email).

Well the noise is still here (scratching noise) and after reboot and check vribrating issue, I can confirm the problem is comming from one of my HDD.
The noise appers few months ago, and I have the same HDD and same NAS since 2 years.

I am not ready to remove one HDD and to start the NAS, i am afraid i could loose data... So I want to be sure that I won't loose anything if i unplug disk, start disk, write on it (because the noise is only during writing, not during reading).

Waiting for your confirmation, I send you status of my disks, maybe it could help to identify the failure disk...

Isn't this hot swappable?
Shutting down and swapping should take longer

You can take one out, mark the one and place where it was installed in the DNS. You can put this into a PC or a HDD caddy. Connect up JUST the power cable to the drive. Don't connect the data cable. Power on the PC or caddy and listen for the noise. If no noise, then put the drive back and do the same process for the other drive. Hopefully either drive will reveal the noise.

These drives are not hot swappable, it is software RAID and that only works with hardware RAID.

Looking at the SMART information Disk1 is running at double the recommended maximum operating temperature so that would be the first one to consider testing.

Power down the NAS, remove Disk1 and install it in a USB/SATA caddy/adapter.
Next, download the disk manufactures disk test tools.
Once you have the disk test tools installed on your PC, plug in the USB adapter/caddy, wait for your operating system to recognise the disk.
Note what drive letter the OS gives the disk and use that when using the disk tools.
Run the full set of tests and note if any problems appear.

If the disk passes all the tests without showing any problems, replace it in the NAS and then do the same with the other drive.

A disk running hot is usually down to one of two things, can be a combination of both.  Either poor or no ventilation or the platter motor having problems, generally with bearings (noise is a good indication of this).  There is another small possibility, one of the read/write heads has become misaligned and is touching the platter although this would first appear as data read/write problems.
