Can not PING DIR-615 even though WAN Ping is ON
« on: September 05, 2016, 07:39:33 AM »

I have DIR 615 Router Hardware Version: E4     Firmware Version: 5.10 Region Asia
I have Enabled WAN PING Response in the Advanced Network Properties with Inbound Filter as 'Allow-All'. Firewall is set to lowest security as TCP & UDP EndPoint Independent.
Even with these settings router does not respond to PING Requests made to its WAN IP Over the Internet.
It however responds  only if it's done within LAN. I have verified that ISP is not blocking PING. If I remove the router and directly connect my desktop PC to ISP, then I am able to Ping that PC with its WAN IP over the internet.
Incidentally I found an old thread with exactly the same problem here  http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=40031.0  This does not have a solution.

Does anyone know if I am still missing something?
Thanks

Unfortunately ISP Modem in case any is not accessible to me.
I only get a LAN Cable dropping in my house and it's Always-ON Dynamic-IP Internet connection.

Are you getting a private IP address or a public IP address from the ISP service to the 615 router?
Can you disable the firewall and test?

It's Public IP and inbound connection is possible. As already mentioned, I can connect my desktop directly to ISP and it responds to PING. It's router that does not when it's connected to ISP.

Is there any option to Disable Firewall on DIR-615? I can only  set it to Endpoint Independent (Lowest  security) setting.

Is there any check box option next to SPI or firewall settings at all in the UI? Sometimes there is a check box and if you uncheck the box and save settings this disables the firewall.

Yes, SPI is disabled as well. Here's snapshot of my firewall config. http://imgur.com/a/2wYd1
Am I missing any other settings somehow?

Is DNS relay enabled or disabled. If enabled try disabling it. Since SPI is disabled, it should be allowing pings to happen.

You might phone contact D-Link support and ask. Not sure if anything else may need to be configured. Maybe a security issue that may not be support. WAN ping should be able to pint the router I think, I don't know about anything else behind the router though.  :-\

Does this model router have Virtual Server features by chance? I know that some low end model routers may not.

DNS Relay was enabled. I have now disabled it, still PING does not respond. Yes this router has Virtual Server feature.
I have run out of solutions now, I suspect this to be some bug in the firmware. I do have subsequent v5.13 firmware binary.
Someday I shall flash that and check as well.

You might set up a virtual server rule and see.
Possible bug and this model being so old now, I don't think it will be fixed. You might try some 3rd party FW like OpenWRT or DD-WRT.

Yes, I tested with Virtual Server (Used 'Other' protocol value as 1 (ICMP) for PING) but now request gets forwarded to my Desktop PC (being port forwarding mapping thru Virtual Server) and it's my PC that responds to PING at the WAN IP of Router. I now suspect this to be a Bug in routers firmware. Thank you for all your inputs.

Maybe by design rather than a bug if VS is working.

Good luck.
