You shouldn't need a D-Link brand router to enable UPNP.  Where did you see the message stating that you need a D-Link router?

I used to own the WGR614 but found the router to be unreliable and unstable.  I subsequently replaced the unit with a DIR-615 a little over a year ago and haven't had any issues since.

My only suggestion (and I'm grasping at straws here) is if the router is fairly old, newer firmware may help.  You can read the firmware release history on the Netgear website to see if there were any relevant changes that may impact DCS performance.

** Disclaimer: updating the router firmware can cause network instability and shouldn't be attempted if the router is working properly and isn't giving you problems **

If you update the firmware, remember to go into the router GUI (Maintenance -> Backup Settings) and save a settings file to our desktop before updating so you can quickly restore everything.

Use the IP Cam Viewer. It works much better than the D-Link app. There's also a free "lite" version.
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ip-camera-viewer/id402656416?mt=8

Works on the iPhone & Droid  ;D

His issue is unrelated to the application used for remote viewing.  This is a network-related issue.

checked settings on netgear - upnp enabled as it is on the d-link.

the browser as well and the iphone app BOTH allow only 60 seconds.
