DIR-868L - Connecting Samsung S7 edge to 5G band resets router
« on: October 05, 2016, 08:45:21 PM »

My ASUS laptop can connect at 5G with no problem but not my new Samsung S7 Edge. Whenever I try connecting the phone to 5G, the DIR-868L goes into reset.  Even if the phone says it is connected at 5G after the router reset, every time I access the internet on the phone, the router resets again.  2.4G seems to work fine.  Is the problem with the phone or the router?  Please help.

"the router resets again." <- what does that mean officially? Does it work after it 'resets'?

Do you have Smart Connect on?

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Smart Connect is not supported on the DIR-868L.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Wireless Configurations

  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Ensure that different SSID names are used between each WiFi 2.4/5Ghz radios. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighbouring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz routers: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N or AC on 5Ghz?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions. Try channel 48 or 149 on 5Ghz.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by that maybe causing interferences?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interferences? Link> Use a WiFi Scanner to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

It works after reset, but only at 2.4G and never at 5G.  If I try 5G again, it goes to reset again.  Now the problem is not just my Samsung S7 but other devices as well at 5G.  In other words, it does not work at all at 5G.  So I believe there is something wrong with the router.

I do not have Smart Connect on.

HW version: B1
FW version: 2.03

ISP Service: cable
Cable modem: Cisco DPC3825

Default SSID is changed and different for 2.4G and 5G

Wireless mode: tried mixed G and N on 2.4G and single AC on 5G as suggested.  Router still resets (device connects at 5G to router with no problem, router resets when accessing internet such as starting an app on the phone).

Channel width: Auto 20/40 for 2.4G and Auto 20/40/80 for 5G

5G channel originally set at 48. Tried changing to Auto and other channels but made no difference - router still resets.

Security mode: WPA-Personal

Use DECT6.0 cordless phone so no interference with WiFi frequencies but not sure about my neighbours.

Live in a condo with many (20+) other WiFi signals.

All testing was done just 5 feet away from router but distance did not make any difference.

Thanks for all the help in advance.  At this point I think I have a defective router.

You might try the following, Set the wifi radio out put from High to Medium or Low.
If this doesn't work, there is v2.04 available:

I had to revive this topic because I have found a solution for this issue. It is not a good one, since it limits your 5GHz band network to a 802.11a 54 Mbps one, which pretty much ruins most of the purpose of this router.

You have to set the 5GHz band to 802.11a only and 20MHz band. This will make Galaxy S7 be able to connect to the router on 5Ghz band without crashing it. OR download beta version 2.05 in this forum and it will work as supposed to!

I'd like to add that I had the same problem:

TL;DR - had the same problem, installed firmware v2.05b and that solved it

I bought this router second-hand from someone over the internet, and at home I was furious to notice that the router kept restarting. I thought he sold me a broken router. I have it connected to my PC through cable and to my phone by wifi on the 5GHz network. However, every few minutes my PC would display that it lost connection and my phone would also display that it lost connection to the wifi network. While on the setting page of the router it would display something like "ROUTER CONNECTION LOST".

I tried looking for an update in the firmware but it said it was up to date. Luckily I started googling and found this forum post. That led me to install the firmware linked on this forum (v2.05b as I have a rev b) and it luckily solved all my problems.

I was wondering why the router was so cheap, but it seemed to work at the guy's house. Heh, suck on it dude, thanks for the cheap router.

It may have not been a problem at the sellers place since he may have not had any Samsung phones that seem to exhibit this issue. Seems like the FW update has corrected the problem for you. You can always check the forums for D-Link support sites for FW updates if the FW checker in the router doesn't result in anything.

Not sure if that was meant for me, but I'm located in the EU.

I own an iPhone 7, not a Samsung, so it seems to just be a problem relating to the 5GHz band. I need to use that 5GHz band because I live in an appartment complex so the 2.4GHz band is completely oversaturated, on any channel. But very glad that the firmware update fixed it. It's pretty misleading that the firmware says it's up to date on the router though. Less tech savvy people would probably have just thrown the router out thinking it was broken.

The "latest" firmware via the web interface is the latest "official" global firmware version. BETA and security patches unfortunately are not on a global release through the router. I agree with you. I wish the firmware page in the UI would tell customers to check the support site for BETA/Security patch firmware versions.
