Did you simply tell Tech support that the modem wasn't working or did you tell them that the poor DIR-857 was struck by lightening? ???

Oh no Michael, I was honest and told them that it was a lightening storm that caused it.  I told them several times as a matter of fact.

And that place I mentioned earlier that fixes modems deals only with cable providers, it's not worth fixing a single modem.

So, it DOES pay to be honest  ;)

I'm rather surprised that D-Link is openly covering the modem considering the circumstances causing the damage.  Kudos to D-Link support!

Will do!  They have this pretty cool option when doing the RMA which allows the consumer to "pay" via a deposit (credit or debit card) on the new unit and they ship that one immediately.  Instead of one having to wait until they troubleshoot the old unit.  I opted for that.  They don't run the charge but it sits as a "hold".

The price is D-Link's MSRP, which is significantly higher than any retail/online store. Best to return the unit quickly!

$180, the list price of a new 857.

This!

And I believe one has 2 weeks (14 days....but really only 10 working days) to do so, IIRC.

I was thinking more about the lightening strike.  Our cables are all buried....phone, cable tv/internet, electrical, etc.

Shouldn't everything already be grounded?  I don't know anything about how it all works but I am interested in learning if anyone can answer my question.
