Tweaking the DGL-4500 For Speed In Transparent Bridge Mode
« on: January 27, 2011, 12:37:29 AM »

I have Qwest as my ISP, and have the Qwest Modem in Transparent Bridge Mode to the DGL-4500.  Is there any way to "tweak" the 4500, to get a little more speed out of it?  I have one computer hard-wired to the 4500 and will have another one on wireless "N" as soon as I get it in a week.  I don't do gaming, however, I will be streaming videos to the wireless computer that I get in a week.  Increasing the speed on the hard-wired modem would be more important. Thanks.  :)

EDIT: I ask this because before I bridged my Router, I was getting a little higher download and upload speeds when I ran speed tests.  After bridging, speed tests show a slight decrease in both download and upload speeds.  Latency is the same.

First of all lets make sure your terminology is correct.

Your ISP modem is in the bridged mode and the 4500 router is what you are connecting too.

There really isn't alot you can do to speed up the router. The router is just making sure traffic is getting to the places the the devices you have connected and can prioritized traffic for gaming.

You can turn off options that you might not use. Things like Protected WFi. Gamefuel and Virtual Server and items like that are not enabled out of the box so your good there.

For wireless, I would recommend changing the Wireless mode to Mixed G and N or N only at 2.4Ghz. If you don't have any devices that use A/B or G modes, keep the mode to a single mode only. You an always change back.

This router is designed for gaming on PC and Consoles. Just curious why your using this router instead of something more tuned to your needs?

How are you checking these speeds? Is the PC connected to the modem directly in bridged mode? What kinda of modem is it?

Thanks.....I do not Game, however, this Router was purchased for me as a gift, and the person who purchased it did not know it was a gaming Router I suppose.

The ISP Modem is bridged to the 4500, and the 4500 is connected (wired) directly to my computer.  The Modem is a ZyXel Q100.

If I turn off Gamefuel, should that give me any more speed?  I have tested the speed before and after bridging via Qwest's own speedtest.  I am also testing via Speedtest.net and Speakeasy.  I have a 20/5 VDSL2 plan through Qwest.

I am going to stream videos to the other N computer which will be wireless.  Should I still turn off Gamefuel?  Are there any other settings that I can make that may bring a slight more speed (especially to the wired computer)?

Ok then,
This router will be good for you at any rate. I have many devices connected to mine and it work great for general use and gaming.

Yes, turn off gamefuel as you probably wont need this.

If your going to be streaming video to your wireless device, I might use the WISH options for this. I don't do steaming for video over wireless so I don't have any experience in setting it up. If you do a search on WISH here on this forum, I think I saw some people talking about setup for it.

There than this, I don't have any other recommendations for this router and your use.

If your seeing a slight decrease on speed on your bridged modem. Then I would presume that had to deal with that modem and your ISP. If your not doing any gaming or using any game consoles on your system. You could return the ISP modem back to unbridged mode and then connect the 4500 router up. It should work well in that mode too. I would put the 4500 routers IP address in the ISP modems DMZ to be sure.

The only reason for bridging the ISP modem if using an external router is that when gaming, there are Network Address Translations that are effected by having 2 routers in line. This effects how the 4500 tries to pass networking data to game consoles that need to connect to various game servers. If your not going to be doing this, then maybe you can run the ISP modem in non bridge mode and connect up the 4500 router. I might try both modes to see what works best. Let us know how it goes.

Thank you very much for your help and responses......The strange thing is that, even though in bridged mode my speed has decreased slightly when doing speed tests (really, mostly my upload speed), and latency is the same, surfing the net seems snappier.  Is that possible, or just my imagination?

Thanks!....I turned off Gamefuel, and did a speed test, and the results are even faster then before I bridged my modem to the Router!  You rock!

Well, your not always going to see the same speeds all the time. Other variables will impact what you see. Other network traffic, busy hours, ISP system status and network loads. Over all you should be seeing near or at speeds. Try not to worry about what you see. Just know that sometimes you might not always get what you pay for as sometimes you will seen down times at the ISP level and just the 5 o'clock traffic stuff here and there. I have 10Mb down and 1Mb up here. Most of the time I see 9-10 mostly. Just last week I had started playing Reach on XBL. Notice my signal was in the red while playing and game was laggy. I was the only one in the red. So I stopped and checked the router and reset everything. Speed was down to 3Mb or less. Directly connected to my modem and checked again. Still no change. Called ISP and they were having problems. The speed was back up in the hour.

So don't worry to much. Theres not much you can do with the router and the speeds you get will just depend on the ISP and everything else on the line. All you can to is to make sure your system is running well.
One other thing I might recommend is using the shortest CAT 6 lan cable between the ISP Modem and the 4500 router. I use a 1 footer. Using CAT 6 cabling if your PCs have Gigabit network cards. I updated mine last year for pennies on the dollar. Peace of mind and get a little bit of over head on internal speeds and xtransfers. If your Pcs dont then I would add Gigabit cards, there fairly cheap.

Yes, I do notice the difference during heavy traffic times.  Luckily, I'm a night owl, and do most of my surfing in the middle of the night.

I'll have to check to see if my network card is a Gigabit.  I believe it is.  If so, I'll pick up some Cat 6 cable.  Would I use 2 Cat 6 Cables, one from my Modem to my Router, and another from my Router to my Computer?
