This is troubling and I don't know why it is happening. For some odd reason files seemingly related to my DIR-655 are being put in the root directory of my hard drive on my Power Mac G5 running Leopard 10.5.8. Two preference files and a folder named ''D-Link'' and another folder named ''Shareport.''
Why is this happening? I have given D-Link/DIR-655 no access to my hard drive.
Furthermore, why this is only happening on that machine while my MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.7 is not being ''invaded.''
Out of fear, perhaps unfounded, I immediately disabled UPnP on the DIR-655.
Why is this happening and how do I stop it? Is it a security issue?

Are you using Shareport for Mac? or just connecting to the router with out any additional SW?
How are you connecting to the router? Wired or Wireless?

Hi and thanks for the reply. Yes, I'm hard-wired (Ethernet) to the DIR-655 and using Shareport on the Power Mac G5.
Unfortunately the developers living in the dark ages at D-Link still haven't come out with a working Shareport for Snow Leopard. I guess they'll have one in time to fall behind again with Lion too...or is that even too optimistic?

Just curious, do you need to run share port?
I don't run share port on my MBP. Realisitally there should only be files with in the applications folder or utility folder for most programs. Not sure what Dlinks requirements are for there SW.
Maybe we can find and alternative instead of using Shareport if you can get away with out using it.

It is true that I could just connect the printer directly to the G5 desktop and share it. I think my original plan was to have Shareport running on every machine so that none actually had to actually be on in order to share the printer. My former MacBook Pro ran Leopard and that was possible. Now it's not. A Dell/Windows machine in the other room also works great as well. Only the new MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard has left the party.
If these strange files hadn't shown up in my root directory of the G5 desktop, I'd never even have thought about it. If these files are benign and pose no security risk, I'm fine. But, as we've seen in the news lately, there's all sorts of malware and phishing attacks going on. I guess I'm just paranoid, or proactive, or both.

No your fine man...I wouldn't worry about the files or shareport. If everything is working well then I wouldn't worry too much. the 10+ years i've been working with Apple products, haven't seen any issues regarding malware and **** like that. And I don't even run AV sw on mine. ;D

Gotcha. The only AV I run is ClamXAV. Good to know you worked for Apple--especially on my other question about iTunes.
I consider myself ''informed'' and fairly ''smart'' as far as the Mac goes, but there are occasions where I'm not afraid to ask questions. This Shareport and files issue just surprised me and I knew I at least had to send up a flag for feedback.

You might want to send to PM a message about this. Maybe they will forward your details and information on what your seeing to the Mac team and maybe they will make changes.
Also, I presume your using the latest SP utility version from the web site?

Definitely I'm using the latest-latest Shareport for Mac--for now. It does work on the PowerPC/G5 desktop, with only the strange files/folders in the root directory syndrome.
However, I'm pretty much going to move on at this point.
I also may just mothball Shareport entirely since it is probably going to dead-end with the onset of Lion and the death of PowerPC. For D-Link to even develop a Snow Leopard version at this juncture would be a wasted effort--not to mention that the DIR-655, at least the one I have, is now a three-plus-year-old router.
So, thanks for the input and suggestions everyone.

Let us know how you plan to share out the printer in the future. Hope it works out well for you. Ya, shame to see a G5 at EOL. Still a good PC, just OS is not supported. :-\

Oh man tell me about it. Still such a fine looking machine---basically just like the newer Mac Pro's. My comment on EOL for it is just acknowledging eventual facts. I still use it to watch movies and edit with a far too expensive earlier version of Final Cut Pro that sadly won't run on a newer machine. I still remember the day when a ''new'' G5 ran like a jet engine. It's all perspective.
