DNS 323 - Raid1 Looking for advice after drive degraded
« on: March 02, 2020, 12:48:32 AM »

I have a DNS 323 with 2 x Seagate 2 TB drives configured as RAID1, accessed through Apple AFP. Recently I noticed that one of the drives was showing as degraded in the web information, however there was no orange light. It's light never flashes, though, so i think it is dead. The NAS has always been flaky but usually comes up eventually. I ran scandisk on the remaining drive, which reported successful. However now no data can be seen, even when the NAS connects. I tried putting the undamaged drive in a caddy but my iMac message was "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" I have ordered another 2 TB drive and will put it in the DNS 323 when it arrives. Any advice would be welcomed. I set up the array 10 years ago and can't even remember what file format I used.
Thanks
Shandy

You will need to review this first:

I recommend leaving the unit OFF until your read to get your data recovered. Do not remove the HDDs from the DNS for now.

While your unit is powered down unplug the power supply and check it gives the correct 12v@3A and 5v@3A.  You will need a load resistor to check the Amps.

The reason to check the power supply is your statement about the nas being flaky - that symptom usually indicates a flaky power supply not giving enough current to run the drives.

Thanks for the messages guys. FurryNutz, unfortunately I did remove the HDDs because I tried one of them in a caddy. The link you sent was useful, unfortunately I use an iMac and I am sure that the drives are formatted with a Mac format. I would love to have similar instructions for a Mac. I would like to know why I couldn't access the drive in the caddy. This is a caddy where i normally use for an old boot up HD, which I use when i want to use old apps.
Interesting observation about the power, Ivan, I will try to check it.

I don't know what file system the Mac uses but the NAS uses either EXT2 or EXT3 - both standard Linux formats which could explain why you couldn't read them in the iMac.

You might be able to read the disk (you only need one with RAID 1) by using a live Linux DVD to boot your Mac, assuming you can do that and again using the USB caddy.  If that works you are up and running when you make a backup of your NAS data.

I would also advise you to get a set of the disk manufacturers disk tools and use them to test the degraded drive.  If you didn't mark which slot the drives were in and you have removed both of them you only have a 50% chance of being able to rebuild the RAID array so it would be better to start again and format the array and restore from the backup.

Hi Ivan, I did mark which drive was which so i put them back in the correct slots. Now my new drive has arrived from China and I have put it in my DNS 323. I must say I find it very annoying that what appears in the web instructions is different to the manual. After inserting the HHD, the manual says:
Step 6: You will be prompt to format and resync on entry, click OK
Note: Formatting a hard drive will erase the data stored on the hard drive. Please backup important data
    before formatting a hard drive
Note: This action will format the replaced drive only and sync the two hard drives in RAID1
Step 7: Wait for format and resync to complete. The DNS-323 is now ready for use
However, the web page said
Page 1: Click Next to begin formatting the replacement drive. Re-sync will take place after the restart. It also had a check box "Reconfigure to Raid1" which the manual doesn't mention. I did not check this, and clicked Next to page 2
Page 2:  Gives 2 radio buttons: Enable Auto-Rebuild and Disable Auto-Rebuild. I have left it on Disable Auto-Rebuild

It's now on 32%. I can't bear the suspense!

Glad yo got it working again. Be sure you have good backups. LOL. Having just one isn't really enough.  ;)

My next step will be to order another new drive and replace Volume 2. Have  you any idea how long I can expect the DNS 323 itself to last?

I don't. I have a 345 that I have had since 2012 I think ???. Still going. Just bought another that I found new in box last year. Still need to bring that up and get it going.
How long you had your unit for?

As long as you look after it it should last a long time.  I have two of them that have been running 24/7/365 since 2009 and I expect them to last until I finally shut down all the computers (I'm 80 so maybe another 10+ years).  The looking after mine includes running them off a UPS and making sure they stay cool, keeping as much dust away as possible also helps.
