DNS-343 died
« on: January 08, 2011, 01:09:40 AM »

Hoping someone out there can help.

DNS-343 purchased overseas (online) 9 months ago died today.  Did a manual shutdown pre-Xmas while I went away, came back this morning and went to start up and... nothing.  No lights, no fans, nothing to indicate any sort of life at all.

Have checked the power supply and all is good.  Power is being supplied to the unit at the correct voltage and amperage.

On the unit itself however, nothing.

Have removed the 4 x Seagate Barracuda 1Tb drives and tried again - nothing.

No lingering smell of 'magic smoke'. No obvious charring or discolouration of internal parts.

Reset button does nothing.

Local D-Link tech support unable to help - apparently D-Link's policy is it has to be dealt with by the local D-Link tech support in the country of purchase.  This means that even if I wanted to get a warranty replacement, I would have to courier it back to the country of purchase...

Any thoughts appreciated.

If you shipped the unit overseas to D'Link for replacement, would they send a new unit to your home country without additional shipping costs?

First response from their tech support was that they won't send back internationally.  Have sent a formal email to them about the situation and am awaiting response.

Do you have a friend or relative in a Country that D'Link serves to circumvent the shipping issue?

I'm not sure how cost effective this would be, but the U.S. has many reputable national chains that provide local P.O. boxes and package receipt/delivery services.  You can see if one of these outlets could receive your replacement unit and forward it to your home address.  One example is "Mailboxes Etc." (www.mbe.com). You can contact them (or another company) and see if they can help and also determine if the cost makes sense.

Perhaps I should have explained - I am in Australia and country of 'origin of goods' was Malaysia via ebay.

Original unit cost: A$400

Cost of shipping unit to Malaysia (by normal airfreight including insurance - which is stipulated as a requirement of the warranty): A$107

D-Link have stated that they won't ship overseas (presumably they will if I prepay it).  So lets assume that there is another A$107 in getting the unit back again.

Total: A$214 (53.5% of original price).  If this was a car it would be a write off.

My thinking is that if the unit is totally unresponsive it is most likely a power issue inside the box.  Does anyone have a working knowledge of the inner workings of the unit that could help in identifying the problem?

As I've told others, you may want to re-post your problem in the DNS-323 forum. The DNS-343 forum has been very "quiet" for the past 6 months, while the DNS-323 is heavily trafficked. The DNS-323 is almost identical in form and function to the DNS-343 (except for the number of HDD bays and additional RAID options), so there's a good chance someone in that forum could provide some additional advice.
