DNS -340L Freeze issue.
« on: April 15, 2019, 07:46:55 AM »

Hello there.

I have a DLink DNS-340L running as a backup repository (or I wish I had).
Problem is the NAS keep randomly freezing.
It stops responding to pings. Only way to get it back on (for a few more minutes, before it freezes again) is to remove the power and reconnect it again.

The NAS is running on the latest firmware (1.08), HHD Hibernation is DISABLED.

Tried a different power adapter, same problem.

Running with 2 WD40EFRX WesternDigital Red hard drives (supposedly supported drives), RAID 1.

Need solutions..

Has a factory reset been performed and setup from scratch yet? This won't harm the data on the drives.

Is the temperature warm or hot of the DNS unit?

Hello there.

Last I checked before losing connection the NAS temperature was around 116º F.

No, a RESET was not performed, but I'll try now.

EDIT:

OK, factory reset done..
Sending some PINGs to the NAS now.. I'll keep you informed if or when it fails...

Ok, also you might consider keeping the NAS cooler. You might place a laptop usb cooler fan under the unit for additional cooling. I keep on under my router 24/7.

Yea, I'm not sure how much the temperature is rising, because after it freezes, there's no way to check anything..

I've now set the FAN to (low/high) instead of AUTO, because it seemed that it wasn't turning on, but I'm assuming that's because it wasn't needed..

I'll check later on if I've lost the connection or not..

Almost seems like something inside is failing.

How long have you had the DNS?
What Mfr and model drives do you have installed?

Has this been always doing this or only after you updated the FW?

Might try downloading prior version of FW and reload using IE11 or FF Browsers. Setup from scratch and see if anything different happens.
Not sure if D-Link is supporting this unit anymore.  :-\

Current NAS Firmware Version 1.08 // Current Microprocessor Firmware Version 1.06 // Firmware Date 05/02/2018

Don't remember the version of firmware I had before trying the update, but the update did not fix the issue..

Probably had the DNS for about 2 years now..

Eeeks. Not sure. Maybe time to get your data off if thats possible.

Only other think I can think of is to check the power support volts and amps. Be sure the tip matches whats on the sticker.

What is the DNS-340L connected to? Router or switch? Change cable and plug into a different port.

Is the power adapter hot? Try a different outlet.

Can you ping the device when it becomes unresponsive?

Any information in the log?  Under application management, enable syslog server, and try email notifications too to see if anything comes up.

Also view system logs under management > system management > logs

The DNS is connected to a switch.

Already tried a different cable and port.

Tried a universal power adapter with the required power, same symptom.

When the device becomes unresponsive it cannot be pinged anymore.

System logs don't show anything of use.

Whats kind of weird is when the device becomes unresponsive, if I try to access the device via WEB, the login page appears, but no user admin to login (not sure if this is related).

So if you don't access the web page, will the DNS keep running?
What browser are you using to access the web page?
Can you try the DNS directly connected to the router and not the switch? What is the Mfr and model# of this switch?
