I'm having an issue with my DIR-865L where it drops the internet connection every 3-4 hours. First, some history:
I bought a new 865L and experienced some issues with the WiFi dropping every now and then as well as the internet dropping every 3-4 hours. Tech support had me upgrade to FW 1.04, but it didn't fix anything. So they had me send it back and shipped me a new one.
Now, with this new one (my current router) I first had an issue with the internet dropping consistently every 5 minutes. Fixed that after roaming the forums here and enabling "Use Unicasting". But then we got the same issue as with my last router where internet (or the connection to my fiber box) drops every 3-4 hours. Now we have to restart the router several times a day, which becomes quite tedious after a while ::) I have figured out that I can fix it by releasing and renewing the WAN IP on the router (Status > Device Info). Tech support had me upgrade to FW 1.04 and then 1.05, but as expected that didn't help. And now they want me to send this router back as well. I'm reluctant to do that because that means 1-2 weeks with no internet or LAN action..
Everything else on the LAN (both WiFi and cable) works when I experience these drops, it's just the WAN side. I have tried hooking up directly to the fiber box when it happens, and I can still access the internet from there.
Any ideas what this can be? I'm thinking it might be as easy to fix as the 5 minute issue I had, but tech support here in Norway won't give me anything other than new FW releases :(
More details:
Region: Norway, but my ISP is in Sweden
ISP: Bahnhof 200/20 mbit/s, but the fiber box is delivered from OpenNet (shared infrastructure company)
Fiber box: PacketFront DRG Ease (DRG711)
Internet connection type: DHCP, confirmed from ISP
MTU: 1500, confirmed from ISP
Fiber box lease time: Haven't received an answer from ISP yet (if it's around the same time as my drops, I'm closer to the culprit). It does however say 300 in the log files on DHCP acknowledge between the router and fiber box. But is it minutes or seconds?
Advanced DNS: disabled
IPv6: disabled (set to Local Connectivity Only)
QoS: enabled (read on the forum that it increased available bandwidth on LAN)
SPI: disabled
NAT: TCP and UDP endpoint independent
Anti-spoof checking: disabled
ALG: enabled on PPTP, IPsec, RTSP, SIP
WPS: disabled
UPnP: enabled
WAN port speed: Auto
IPv4 Multicast Streams: enabled
IPv6 Multicast Streams: disabled
SharePort, DLNA and iTunes: disabled

If FW isn't fixing anything, I would presume that there is an issue with the ISP service and or ISP box that this router is connected too. You should have to manually renew or restart these routers. Having to do this tells me that the handshake between the ISP box and this router is not happening automatically or the router is waiting to handshake and waiting to acquire the connection and data.
There was another user on this board I think with a similar issue and it was found that there was a bad infrastructure network switch on his line. He is residing in a apartment complex building.
What is the WAN port speed set for? Try the various option under WAN port speed to see if this might help.
Check the cable between the router and ISP box. Swap out. CAT6 recommended.
Try using the Static IP address option under Setup/Internet/Manual/Connection Types?
I would find out what other problems could be causing this. Test this router at a different location, friend, family place that has Internet and see if the problem follows. I presume it might not follow.
-
I tried setting a static IP, but that didn't give me access to internet at all so I reverted back to dynamic. I had the port speed at auto, but I've changed it to 1000 now, and it has been stable ever since - I'll have to monitor it over a couple of days though.
What do you think about the image of the logs below? It seems weird to me that the router checks with the fiber box every 2,5 minutes...

-
Ya, wonder if thats coming from the ISP box or router is doing that. You might ask both ISP and DLink support about that.
Keep us posted.
-
I haven't had the time to test the router anywhere else. Only thing tech support bothered to ask about was Unicasting. So now they're sending me a new router (again). I'll post an update once I have set up the new one.
-
How many routers does this make?
If this problem seems to follow on what you have had and on the next one, I think the problem lies up stream from the router and with the ISP services.
Please try to test at a friends or families place if resources are available. Curious to see if this problem follows.
-
It'll be the third one. I too think that there must be something with the connection between the fiber box and the router. I got it confirmed from my ISP that the lease time is 300 seconds. My opinion is that it doesn't have to be that often, so I asked if they could increase it. But we'll see when the new one arrives. "Unfortunately" the only thing tech support suggests is to try a new router..
If I have the same issue with this new one I'll definitely try it at a friends house!
-
Ya, 2 routers and now a 3rd...Ya, something is going on with the ISP I think or in the configuration there of. Seems like the router is probably loosing the connection due to something on the ISP side. These routers are designed to automatically re-gain the connection if there is one and the handshake requirements are met. Meaning if the data and ISP modem connect and sync up, the router will connect and the data will flow. If the router can't connected, it will re-try.
I see there is v1.05 available out now for your region. Not sure if that will resolve anything.
Keep us posted.
-
Yeah. Seems weird that it should be the router.
Already got (and tried) 1.05 from support. Didn't do much..
-
Ok, let us know what the 3rd one does and if you can test at a friends place, hopefully with a different ISP set up and modem. ;)
-
Ok, now this is weird. When I thought I lost all connection to the internet it appears I actually don't. I was working on my company's Citrix platform and was downloading a couple of torrents when I noticed I had lost connection in my local Outlook and I couldn't browse to any websites from my laptop..
So no http (Outlook also connects through http), but the ICA protocol (Citrix) and torrents still work. What's that all about? ???
-
I've got my new router up and running and after 3 hours and 44 minutes I lost the internet connection again... :-\ But as I explained above it seems to only affect http traffic and one of my colleagues suggested it might be DNS related. So now that I had the same issue I tried a different DNS setup on the router - I disabled DNS relay and all of the sudden the "internet connection" was back again without restarting the router.
Now I'll just have to wait and see if that was a permanent fix :)
-
Keep us posted.
-
Everything has been up and running for 24 hours and 24 minutes with multiple devices connected - all up until I switched on my MacBook Air just now and then we lost internet once again... :-\ Instead of restarting the router I now enabled DNS relay and disabled it again and got the internet connection back, but only for a couple of minutes. Did the same thing again (enable and disable DNS relay) and got the internet connection back once more. I'll see for how long this time.
What is going on? ???
-
You used the same configurations on the other 865's?
It could be something with your ISP services. You already send back the other 865?
-
Yes, had DNS relay enabled. Never thought of disabling it until I got the new one. Still have the old one here.
Same thing happened today. Everything was working fine until i started using my MacBook. If my MB stops the internet connection, it needs to be an issue with the router, doesn't it?
-
What OSX version are you using on the Mac Book? I haven't seen any issues with my OSX 10.7.5 or 10.8.3.
Ensure the Mac is getting a valid reserved IP address.
Something between the Mac and the router. I presume something maybe on the Mac.
You might reset one of the old 865s and see if by turning DNS relay OFF resolves that problem.

Hello,
I'm suffering the same behavior.
Router can work as espected for two or three days, but after that, it lost internet conexión and reboots automatically ones and again.
It's connected to a Thomson cable-roter TCW 770 that works perfectly.
My ISP is Euskaltel and it gives 3 public IP per cable conection (TCW 770).
This is an arquitecture overview:
ISP
|
|
---------------
| TCW 770 | (Configured as Bridge)
---------------
| |
(for LAN) | | (DMZ)
(dhcp1 from ISP)| | (dhcp 2 from ISP)
| |
--------------- -------------
(WAN: dhcp-c) | DIR-865L | | SERVER |
(LAN: dhcp-s) | | -------------
---------------
| | | |
(LAN clients, wired & wireless)
Where:
dhcp-c = DHCP client
dhcp-s = DHCP server
Has anyone any idea of how to solve my problem?
Thanx in advance.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=47512.0) version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/fixing_double_nat.htm) and How NAT Works (http://cognitiveanomalies.com/cisco-nat-how-nat-works/).
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53008.0)

Ok, so after monitoring it over a couple of weeks I can now say for sure that it's my MacBook that's wrecking the network. I've had the network stable over several consecutive days without any issues - all up until I turn on my MacBook. Then it takes a couple of minutes and all internet traffic stops until I reboot the router.
I've had multiple iPhones, an iPad, and Apple TV, an Xbox 360, a Windows Server 2012 and a Windows 8 laptop running fine for several days as long as my MacBook is shut down.
The MacBook is running OS X 10.8.3 with all the latest software updates. It's set up using DHCP but with a manual IP address. I thought I already had reserved the IP on the router, but that was probably on one of my old routers. However I've reserved it again on the new one now.
What on my Mac can be causing this?
-
Hmmm...I use the same OSX version and don't see this issue. However My MBP is a 2007 edition so a bit older. What year is your model?
This happens both wired and wireless?
I set the OSX networking for Automatic and reserve the IP addresses ON the router for the wired and wireless connections on my Mac. So there are 2 reservations.
-
It's a MacBook Air 13" Mid 2011 model. I haven't used a wired connection in a while, but I will definitely check next time.
I'll set my MB to automatic IP and keep the reservation on the router only and see if that makes a difference.
-
Ok, Does the air come with a LAN wired connection? ???
Keep us posted.

No, but I have both a USB and a Thunderbolt to ethernet adapter :)
Will do!

Anyone has resolved this issue?
I have the similar issue. I have many devices eg. Ipads, androids mobile, macbook air, iphones and MBP.
Only 1 particular MBP will cause Internet connection unavailable whenever i used it for a while eg. 10mins or so. I need to reboot the router to make internet available again.

Link>Welcome! (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=41537.0)
I haven't seen any issues with my 865L. I had it online for a couple of weeks and is a solid router. I have a few WiFi devices and also do gaming on it as well. Lets see if you can provide some answers to some of the questions and lets see if we can help you get yours going...
- What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
- Link>What Firmware (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=47512.0) version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
- What region are you located?
Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
- What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
- What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
- What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
- Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53008.0)
- For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.
Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
- Turn off ALL QoS (http://vonage.nmhoy.net/qos.html) or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quality_of_service) or Gamefuel.
- Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
- Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
- Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53222.0)
- Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
- Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
- If IPv6 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ipv6) is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
- Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Enable or Disable SPI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPI) to test.
- Enable uPnP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upnp) and Multi-cast Streaming (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multicast) under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
- Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
- WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
- Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48695.0) feature. Tools/Time.
- Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAT6)
Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48327.0) and Managing Signal Congestion (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53228.0) and Good Neighbour Policy (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=10634.0)
- Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
- What wireless modes are you using?
- 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz routers: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
- Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
- Try setting a manual Channel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_channel) to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
- What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Encryption_Standard), so you might want to try TPIK (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temporal_Key_Integrity_Protocol) only or Auto TPIK and AES.
- What wireless devices do you have connected?
- Any 2.4 or 5Ghz cordless house phones?
- Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer (http://www.metageek.net/) to find out. How many?
- If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF Short GI (http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-features/30969-what-do-80211ns-optional-features-mean-for-you), WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistence and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
6" minimum safe distance between devices.

The issue is for both wifi and direct lan connection from dir865 to macbookpro.
Then i try disable dns relay and the internet connection resume. The next time when the internet connection drops, i enable dns relay. Seems to me that i need to toggle the dns relay to resume internet connection. Mine is a fibre connection from ISP to the dir865.
