Does the 510L replace the 506L?
« on: April 04, 2014, 01:27:22 AM »

I see that Dlink have made the 506 EOL

Does the 510 replace it?

Does the 510 do everything that the 506 does?

Thanks.

No, the 510L doesn't do EVERYTHING the 506L did. It has a lot less configuration of router features and can't be used as a repeater or a wireless adapter. But if you want the fundamentals of a travel router, it serves the part. It is claimed that the 510L will convert a USB cellular modem into a WiFi hotspot, but D-Link has not published a list of supported modems and history suggests that only a handful will work. (The 506L can't do this at all.)

Okay - thanks.

I saw that the 506L was EOL so assumed it had been replaced, but could only find this model as a potential replacement.

strange - I went to a d-link page and it said it was EOL.

Can't find that d-link page now.

Apologies for the confusion

I beg to differ, it works as an extender, wifi hotspot, AP. I love this thing, it connects to mobile broadband and xDSL. A published list of accepted modems and carriers is available on the support page.

The 510L does not have "repeater" mode, where it simply rebroadcasts an existing signal and if you connect you are on the same subnet as the AP. It also does not serve as a wireless adapter for a non-wireless computer connected by Ethernet.
