So far, I like the DCS-936L Camera
« on: August 01, 2016, 09:58:20 AM »

After a shaky start, which was mostly my misunderstanding about setup, the camera is delivering on what I expected.  To be honest though, there is precious little included to help with setup.  I have a degree in engineering and have installed more than one WebCam and what stumped me would stump most average people.

That said, I like the camera. I got it primarily because of the ease of making it battery powered, and easily moved from location to location, without need of finding a power outlet or running extension cords.  The one thing I wish it had, was the ability to control it from a smart phone, when not connected to home network. I know it can connect to phone, because part of setup requires direct phone to camera connection to control the install.  However, once installed, it appears that the camera can't be the wifi access point, like during setup.  I'll have to look into that and see if there is a way.

It would be a nice camera to be able to use as general security, without need of home network.  One thing I'm going to investigate is having my phone be the wifi hotspot and see if I can get that to work as my network.

This is a short 10 second video of a motion capture.

Here is my camera setup. It has been running for 16 hours so far, and only about half depleated, based on LED power levels.

Ah, glad you got it working. Installing on your other mobile devices is kewl. I presume D-Links DIR-510L will work as well. Thought not a official supported method with D-Link possibly. I guess it would take a bit more configuration to get it working with a mobile router.

Just get another router and have it on that network.

Have your phone connect to that new router.

Come to think about it, I already have a mobile router.  Forgot about it. I use a TP-Link router for my Jeep, for radio communications over the internet. Should work fine for video.  AND, I have unlimited data on that cell connection. ;)  It's only a 3G network but I think it will work.

Update:

I started the camera on battery yesterday at 1800 pacific time,  It's now 1530 and it's still running, with about 25% remaining. Hopefully, it will make it 24 hours on one battery.  During that time, it has had motion sensing on, and local recording.  Kind of a simplistic test. I really wasn't expecting it to run this long. I'm going to repeat the test with more specific tests.  Might try a continuous recording test, to see how long it will run,

I can run a Panasonic HXA500 in 720p/30 with a "legit" (non-chinese) 12,000 mAh lithium-ion battery pack for 12 hours....

I haven't tried a 128GB card ...

Not sure where you are headed with this battery thing and run times....

I did have an SJCAM5000+ that I did a time lapse for a snow storm --- well I think the battery was necessary inside the cam - with electrical adapter...  friggen battery pack warped after a few days... so something over heated... lol

If the camera cannot detect the WiFi network, it will automatically switch on its own WiFi network (the Wifi network with DCS....) and you can use your phone to connect to its WiFi network again.

RAVPower IMO makes the best portable batteries. I have the exact same one you have in the picture. BTW how did you make the cam battery powered?
