HDDVIEWER - Connection Failed Error
« on: March 10, 2017, 09:02:10 PM »

I am using the latest version of HDDViewer 1.2 on Windows 10 64 Bit, I can connect to the DNR-202L via my web browser using it's IP address with no problem.  When I run the HDDViewer program and enter the IP address and the "User" and "Password" and click the "test connection" button I get a "Connection Failed" error with no further information.  Is there any log files or other trouble shooting steps that I can use to determine the actual problem and get this to work.
I can also ping the DNR-202L with no problems.  One further bit that may be relevant is the the DNR-202L is on another subnet connected by a secure VPN link.
There is full IP routeing in place and I can perform all other functions on the DNR-202L with a web browser with no issues!

UPDATE
I did some further testing and found that if I remove HDDViewer reboot the computer, reinstall HDDViewer and run the program at the end of the installation it will connect to the DNR (but only once).  If I exit the HDDViewer software and restart it again I get the connection error again.  To get it working again I must repeat the remove, reboot & reinstall again. then I get one more successful connection again!!!  I have even tried running HDDViewer as "Administrator" and I get the same connection error!!!

Further UPDATE
I just noticed that there is a newer version of HDDViewer available 1.3.3 (it is labeled as 1.03.3 on the download site, so I installed it and it fails to make a connection even after a fresh install.  I hope that someone has some suggestions on how to resolve this issue?

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your DNS? Look at the sticker behind or under the device.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the DNSs web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Where are you seeing this updated version of the app?

I presume the VPN may not be support and the viewer app needs to be on a PC with the DNR connected on the same sub net. Can you test the app with a PC and the DNR on the same subnet?

Thanks for the reply

The hardware version is "A", I think that this is the only version ever released!

I found the newer version of HDDViewer here

http://support.dlink.ca/ProductInfo.aspx?m=DNR-202L

The link to the download is as shown below

ftp://ftp.dlink.ca/PRODUCTS/DNR-202L/HDDVIEWER_1.03.03.EXE

It shows that it was released on 10/11/16, although the file name says 1.03, the program itself says it is 1.30.

The current firmware is v2.04.03

As far as testing the device connected directly to my PC, it is currently impossible, unless I drive for 7 hours, and then walk for 1.5 miles through deep snow down an unmaintained road.  This would explain why I use a VPN for communications with the device!

I find it difficult to understand what method of communication the HDDViewer might be using that would not be supported over a VPN link, when all other access to the device works with no problem, but I have no idea how the HDDViewer actually works

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. Ask them about this kind of configuration. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

Does it work if you are on the same subnet?

I am not sure, the equipment is not accessible at this time, see my earlier reply's for the reason.  I don't recall testing this utility before the equipment was installed.  As there does not appear to be any info about this utility I am going to attempt another call to DLINK tech support, who were not very helpful last time I called, all they cared about was if I could connect to the equipment via the cloud, which I can with no problems other than it is very slow with a 875Kb uplink speed (the joys of being at the maximum distance from the DSL switch gear)!

So you no longer need to remove the harddrive and put it in your computer with HDD Viewer ?

Got clarification. The DNRs drives needs to be removed from the DNR and connected directly to a PC to use the HDDViewer app.

FurryNutz:

If that was the case why does the application have the option to input the IP address and the username and password for the DNR-202L.

Also how do you explain that on one version of the HDDViewer I was able to connect to the DNR-202L and view the videos once after the initial install of the software!

Bruce, I sent this to D-Link support.

What VPN are you using? Is it software or on your router? What routers are you using on both ends?

I see now where the IP address is:

The VPN is using OpenVPN, Client/Server running between two identical ASUS RT-68U routers running the most recent version of the ASUS-Merlin firmware.

I just test HDDViewer V1.2.00 in a Windows 7 x86 VM and imediatly after the install I was given the option to run the viewer at the end of the install program, I let the program launch, entered the connection information and was able to connect and view the videos over my VPN connection. I then exited HDDViewer and relaunched it from the desktop icon, now I can not get it to connect again - it just displays a "Connection failed" message. My conclusion is that it is not related to running the program on Windows 10 x64, as it does exactly the same thing on Windows 7 x86!

I then had another thought and tried launching the program from the desktop icon again, but this time I ran it as administrator and the program works perfectly, in spite of the fact that my user ID is a member of the Administrator group; something is not quite right with the permissions that the  program needs to work properly!

I have just verified that HDDViewer works on a clean copy of Windows 10 x86 over my VPN, but it must be run as Administrator even if the user is in the Administrators group!  Now to test on a clean copy of Windows 10 x64!
