DHCP Reservations List
« on: January 21, 2017, 01:29:48 PM »

I've been using DIR-655 routers in several locations for many years. Last year we moved into a new apartment (3200 sq ft) divided into quadrants by reinforced concrete walls. Furthermore, there appears to be significantly more RF interference in this location than I've experienced anywhere else in the city. Needless to say the WiFi reception in 3/4 of the apartment isn't the greatest. Over the next few years (as I repaint) I plan to pull Cat5e cable to various parts of the apartment . In the meantime I've purchased a DIR-885 router in the hope that it will improve the WiFi reception.

I've just started to configure the router so that I can drop it in place of the existing DIR-655. The only thing I can't figure out how to do is reserve IP addresses for specific devices (computers, printers, access points, etc.) on the network. Please tell me I'm missing something. Otherwise the router is going back to the store.

Region:  NA (Canada)
Model:  DIR-885L
H/W Ver:  A1
F/W Ver:  1.11 (Yes I know there is a newer version, but don't want to update it until I know I'm going to keep it).

Many thanks,

Larry ....

Go to the Clients page (round icon) and select it.
Then scroll down and all connected devices will appear as tiles. Look for the gray pencil on each tile. Select this pencil and a new window will appear.
Here you can give a IP address, edit the name of the device and then select the slider bar to Enable the reservation.

FurryNutz, thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I get that there's a movement to simplify the user interface for a lot of things, so after using the venerable DIR-655 for nearly a decade, the pretty diagram confused me.

I've now had a chance to complete the configuration of the DIR-885, and it's now in service. I did a before and after WiFi survey of the apartment (using NetSpot) and the signal is noticeably stronger in many locations. Furthermore, doing a speed test shows that the WiFi is no longer the bottleneck when it comes to our internet connection (6 Mbps DSL). Very pleased with the router over all.

The only minor issue (for me) that I came across while configuring the router was the IP address space used by the Guest Zone. The DIR-655 uses 192.168.0.x (same as the local network). The DIR-855 uses 192.168.7.x (seems like an improvement to me). This is not user configurable for either router. In my case this latter IP address space (192.168.7.x) is used as part of my network's double NAT setup. [Yes, I know, double NAT is bad, blah, blah, blah,.... Had to use it for historical reasons, blah, blah, blah,.... Long boring story, blah, blah, blah,....] It was easy enough to get around, but required changing several port forwarding / virtual server settings in the DSL modem. Net net everything is working fine.

Once again, very pleased with the router.

I think D-Link moved to set the Guest Zone to a different LAN IP address over concerns a few years back. I know they had some router models that you could configure the GZ then I presume that over concerns with mis-configurations of GZ, they just made it static. Seems to work for the most part.

Glad you got it working. You can use the 655 as a 2ndary AP now.  ::)

Enjoy.  ;)

I am getting maximum DHCP reservation reached, so decided to remove those not required.

how to delete DHCP reservation?  seems I am unable to delete it even if I unselect the "Reserve IP" and then save.

What browser are you using?
Are the devices still connected to the router when your trying to remove the reservation or not connected?

both firefox, IE and edge.

you are right, the device needs to be offline before it can be deleted from DCHP reservation.

I was thinking it doesn't need to be connected or can be connected. As long as there is a gray X on the device tile, if you click on that, that should remove the device and reservation. I presume you can also edit the device tile and edit the reservation to disable it, then save the setting.
