DCS-5029L Not sending motion snapshots to FTP server
« on: November 18, 2015, 04:31:16 PM »

I've got 3 cameras, 2 older DCS-932L's, and a newer DCS-5029L. The 2 932's work flawlessly as far as sending motion-detected image snapshots to an FTP server of mine in the Azure cloud. However, I cannot get my DCS-5029L to send images. I can see in Filezilla on my server that the 5029 is connecting, but no images ever are sent. I also can tell that motion is being triggered because in the Live Video tab in the GUI, the little running man in the top-left flashes orange, and then I see the connections appear in Filezilla on my server, but no images. I have verified several times that the FTP connection info is the same across all 3 cameras. The 2 932's worked on the first try and I haven't had to mess with those at all, but the 5029 seems to be having some issues. I'm on current 1.11 firmware version, but was thinking of downgrading to 1.02 to see if maybe the newer firmware is just buggy. Has anyone reading this successfully gotten a motion event to send images to an FTP server with a 5029L? One odd thing I noticed with my 5029's FTP connection, is that filezilla sees it as passive, even though I have the Passive Mode box Un-ticked in the FTP Server options page.

Lines from filezilla connection log showing passive mode:

I apologize if this post seems a little all over the place, it's been a long day and now I'm racking my brain trying to figure this out.

Thanks in advance.

In case others are having a similar issue, I downgraded my firmware to 1.02 and viola, the sending of motion-detected images to my FTP server works like a charm. At some point I may try upgrading back to 1.11 but for now it's working so I'm just going to leave it.

Cheers!

Well I upgraded back to 1.11 firmware, and now sending to FTP server is broke again. I changed no settings at all, but when I hit Test button in FTP server setup page, it gives me a "test error" message. Pretty sure now that the 1.11 firmware is bugged in regards to FTP.

The 1.02 firmware worked for a while, but sometime last night, it stopped sending motion jpgs and instead was only sending event logs that motion was detected. So, it appears that this model of camera is just plain not good at sending motion-detected images to an FTP server. Such a shame, my 2 other, cheaper D-Links have had zero problems. They even auto-create a new date-stamped folder every day, whereas the 5029L was not, it was just throwing the images all into the same root folder.

Does anyone from D-Link ever read these forums? Just wondering.

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

What Mfr and model is the main host router?
What wireless modes are you using?
What is the distance between the Camera and the main host router?

Be to enable uPnP and uPnP Port Forwarding ON ALL cameras. I recommend setting up static IP addresses ON each camera thats outside of the main host routers DHCP default IP address pool, i,e, 192.168.#.92 and .93 for the 932Ls and 192.168.#.29 for the 5029L.

Thanks for the response, Furry.

I'm located in the US region.
My router is a TP-Link Archer CR700
I am using Wireless N with a WPA2-PSK
Distance between camera and router is perhaps 25', no obstruction or walls.
I've already set up static IPs for all 3 of my cameras that fall outside the DHCP scope.
UPnP presentation was already ticked, but UPnP port forwarding is not. Would you be so kind to describe what I need to enable for port forwarding?

Also, I checked my 932L's, and neither of those have UPnP port forwarding enabled either.
I also double-checked to make sure that all 3 cameras are using the same DNS servers, and they are.
Trying to take my 5029L back to 1.02.00 firmware now to see if I can at least get the FTP Test to work again (it worked on 1.02.00, see attached).

So I'm back on 1.02.00 now and seems to be working, but we'll see if it continues. Yesterday when I was on 1.02.00, it eventually stopped sending motion images and instead only sent motion text files saying "Motion Detected".

It would be really nice if a new firmware would come out for the 5029L that A) worked sending motion images to FTP, and B) created subfolders each day, like my 932L's do. Having the images organized in date-stamped folders is much nicer than having all of them in one big folder. However, I supposed I could take some time and write a powershell script that runs every night at 11:59pm and automatically creates a date-stamped folder and then moves all files from that day into the new folder. I'd be OK doing that.

uPnP and uPnP Port Forwarding is on the Setup/Network Setup/uPnP Settings...

I understand where the settings are located thank you. I should have been more clear in my question. What port do I select for the port forwarding and why is it needed? My 932Ls don't use it and they work great.
Thanks.

uPnP Port Forwarding is a radio button option only. It's either enabled or disabled. Both uPnP and uPnP Port Forwarding buttons should be enabled on each camera.

Well, you may be thinking of another model or firmware, because on my DCS-5029L, there is most certainly a forwarding port field that becomes editable once I tick the Port Forwarding box.

However, since I've downgraded to 1.02.00 firmware, the images have been sending as expected. I've also set up my camera to auto-reboot every day at midnight and that seems to be helping as well. I wish this model would auto-create the datestamped folders like my DCS-932L's do, but it's something I can live without. I'm just going to stay on this older firmware until a new one is released.

Thanks for your help.

No that's the same feature I refer too. However seems you have the extra editable field that other cameras don't have. I don't know what value to put here. Maybe use the default value if one is already selected there.

The more cameras that are needed the more ports are used thru uPnP so this is why uPnP Port Forward is needed on ALL cameras.

Ya, no need to ugprade. "If it works, don't fix it!"

Power cycling is only avoiding the problem. If this is needed then the problem should be found. I've never had to power cycle my camera on a daily basis.

I'm not saying that rebooting the camera daily is allowing it to work, I'm just saying that I enabled it and since then, the camera has been sending images every day. Before when I was on 1.02.00, the camera stopped sending images sometime on the 2nd or 3rd day of operation and was instead sending me text files saying "Motion Detected". But since I enabled the reboot daily option, I have not seen this behavior. YMMV.

I'm going to leave port forwarding off for now. All 3 cameras are functional and sending motion-detected images. My only minor complaint about the 5029 is that it doesn't auto-create new date-stamped folders like my 932's do. Oh well, I can script something easily enough that creates the folders and moves the files for me automatically.

Thanks.

Hello I am having the same problem sending data from the camera to a USB hard drive connected to a Netgear r8000 router.  My firmware is 1.12 on the camera.  Where can I get the older firmware 1.02 to see if this corrects the issue?
