890L Slow WAN speeds
« on: October 27, 2015, 02:27:31 PM »

Hello, we have a wireless high speed internet provider. It's a point to point system with low latency and good speeds but not my computer that is connected to the dlink router via ethernet wan port. All the wireless devices speed test comes up as 10 down and 5 up however my wan port will not give me more then 2 down 5 up. What settings effect wan port download speeds?
 The switch power supply is:
phihong model # psa15m-300(sm) 10/100 mbit
Model Name: DIR-890L   Hardware Version: A1   Firmware Version: 1.08 I had to reset the router to factory settings the other day because it would not work with anything wireless.

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
  Link> >FW Update Process

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Is the wired PC connected to the WAN or LAN port on the 890L? Should be the LAN port. WAN port should be connected to the ISP modem.

PC 3rd Party Security Software Configurations
  • Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
  • Turn off all devices accept for one wired LAN PC while testing.
  • Disable any downloading client software managers, i.e. Torrents or similar.

PC Web Browser Configurations
What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF? If IE 8, 9, 10 or 11, set compatibility mode and test again. (For older generation routers.)
Disable any security browser Add-ons like No Script and Ad-Block or configure them to allow All Pages when connected to the router.
Clear all browser caches.

So after doing a factory reset and going in and just wired LAN speed testing does not result in ISP speed specs?
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values

Is this your ISP modem? http://www.eftechplace.com/power-over-ethernet-poe-30v-i100312/

on the router the mtu is set to auto but they told me it's 1500, The cable is brand new cat5e. I reset the router and speed test still show 2 down and 5 up at best with all other wifi devices off.

Try disabling IPv6 or setting it to Local Only.
Disable DNS Relay.

Any chance you can test the 890 at a different location, say a friend or families place to see if the problem still follows?

Can you do a Save Config to File on the router and email that to me please?

What are you current QoS speeds settings set for? Factory defaults to 300/300. If you leave your test device to be not selected in any of the priority sections, QoS should not apply.
Can you input 8 down and 5 for UP and see what your speeds are if you put your test PC in the Highest section and test. Post your results here please.

Problem solved, the issue was not with the router so it seems. Device manager<network adapters<Select network card<advanced<Set to 10 mbps half duplex(or whatever your mbps rating is from your carrier.
