Firmware update to 1.02
« on: January 19, 2013, 12:38:05 PM »

Can any one tell me why was the firmware updated to 1.02 ?
I wonder what problems the update was to fix?
I have a drop problem where both the wired and wireless drop intermittently.  Tech support told me to replave the unit which I did , with the same results.
I just bought the DIR-826l this week and I have been on to tech support 5 time aleady, I am wondering if I should return it and start again

Link>Welcome!

This is what the release notes say:
-Enhanced wireless setup wizard for mobile devices.

-Enhanced wireless performance.

-Enhanced IPv6 auto-detection.

-Storage function is now enabled by default.

If your continuing to have the same problems, I presume there could be other areas we should look at.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
Has a Factory Reset been performed and set up from scratch?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set Time and Time Zone under Tools/Time.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

How old is this modem? Recent or in uses for a while? If older, i would ask the ISP for a newer updated model.
I would have the ISP also check the phone lines to make sure they are in good working condition and filtered correctly.

If your on PPPoE, ensure ALWAYS ON is selected on the router.

Let us know if you can answer or check out some of the other suggestions.

My provider(Distributel) tells me this modem is current and the line was checked.
I had a visit from tech support (Bell Canada) for the line and it was checked out from here to the provider.
PPPOE is always selected on the DIR-826L.....the router was setup by Dlink tech support as per their instructions.

So it should be good to go then...unless there are many other Wifi routers in the area.

How does the number of other Wifi routers in the area effect mine?
There are other Wifi routers in my area, I can pick-up at least 6 or more.
I asked my neighbourseither side of me if they have a simular problem as they are the strongest signals, they tell me they do not and have no problems with dropping out signals.
I have a wired connection that also drops when the wireless drops out.

Having many or more than a few and only having 11-13 channels to work with, the router(s) are all competing for an open and clear channel. Some maybe attempting to work on the same channel which is not good or recommended as they cannot properly operate on the same channel. Your nieghbors WiFi router could be setup differently or not include the "good neighbor policy" that is a WiFi standard that rules that all Mfr routers must work well around other Wifi routers. Some older routers did not have this policy.

You need to find a clear and unused open channel that the other 6 WiFi routers are not using and set your router to this manual channel if one is available.

How would I do this?

I am still having trouble with the wired connection that drops out and I get the flashing globe on the DIR -826L.....

My old Dlink  WBR-2310 never did not drop my wired connection, even when the wireless dropped.......any ideas????

Doing some research on your ISP modem, I see that this model is about 6-7 years old as for being on the market. I would recommend that you ask your ISP if they have any newer model DSL modems and or it possible, if you they allow you to have your own and maybe get yourself into a DLink DSL model modem. I presume that since this modem is older along with the WBR router of the same era, they worked well. There maybe a compatibility issue now with newer HW and older HW. I would also swap out the cable between the ISP modem and 826 and test to see if this help. I'm leaning towards the modem just being older here though. Any family or friends around that you could take the 826L to there place and test? As a last resort.
