Website Filter / Log Web Access Issues
« on: November 20, 2012, 10:53:58 AM »

Having either of these enabled causes issues with many sites.

Just a few examples:
Gotomypc client continually pops up a timeout message, click retry and it works.
Facebook under IE9 sometimes bombs out to a connection error page.
   speedtest.net upload test fails.
Other random issues with some sites - best buy's reward zone site for instance.
It's not just the win clients, the amazon streaming client on my TV had issues for instance.

ALL of the issues go away when access control is disabled.  Access control seems OK as long as it only contains port filters. If any rules applied to a client contain either (or both) of the web options then the issues start again.

The easiest and most consistent test the speedtest.net site.  The download portion of the test always completes, but the upload portion consistently fails when either option is enabled.

Started system on v1.01 firmware, upgraded and tested under 1.02 as well.

One of the primary reasons for choosing the dlink router was the url logging.  Without the logging  I might as well return the unit.

Any ideas?

Link>Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.

Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed

ISP - ATT UVerse
DMZPlus enabled on ATT 2Wire gateway for dLink router
Hardware - Rev A1
Firmware - 1.02

Problem only occurs on the 826 with filter or logging rules enabled.  If I disable the rules or replace the 826 with another router the problem does not occur.

Has the 826L been factory reset and set up from scratch after the FW was updated?

Has the 826L been factory reset and set up from scratch after the FW was updated?

For completeness sake tonight I:

1: Reset to factory defaults, and left all settings at their default.
2: Went to speedtest.net and both download and upload tests completed OK.
3: Enabled Access Control
4: Added Policy
        Policy Name: Logall
        Schedule: Always
        Machine: my ip
        Method: Log Web Access Only
        Save
5: Again went to speedtest.net - download test OK, but upload test FAILED.
6: Reboot Router
7: Again went to speedtest.net - download test OK, but upload test FAILED.
8: Went to Access Control, disabled "Logall" policy (cleared checkbox on policy line).
9: Again went to speedtest.net - download test OK, and upload test OK.
10: Reboot Router.
11: Again went to speedtest.net - download test OK, and upload test OK.
12: Re-enabled policy
13: Tested gotomypc - got timeout errors
14: Disabled policy
15: Tested gotomypc - no errors.

It's not just gotomypc and speedtest, those are just the two most consistent tests for the problem I have found.

Ok, seems like the filter is effecting the speed.

I would recommend testing this router out on a different modem as a last resort. We've seen some odd behavior with ATT Uverse modems. DMZPlus sometimes doesn't fully by pass the modem processing. It's supposed to however we've seen other wise. Any chance you have a neighbor, friend or family with just a stand alone modem to see if this behavior follows? I presume it could however it would be nice to rule out any ISP modem possibilities.

I might give your set up rules a test run on my 857 just to see if any other routers are doing this.

I would Phone contact DLink support, lever 2 or higher and see if there is a resolution that can be found. let them know what you did in those steps.

Keep us posted.

Ok, seems like the filter is effecting the speed.

It's not a speed issue.  More like packets/connections being dropped.  On speedtest for instance, the error occurs imediately upon starting the upload test.  Gotomypc continues to function, if you don't mind popups every 15 seconds.  Web pages immediately error out after a click when it happens.

The web access logging has changed on this router compared to other dlink units I've used.  The web log lines have changed formats and all have a "[PROXYLOG]" tag.  My gut is they are trying to use a transparent proxy (or changed the underlying proxy) for the web filter/log functions and it's broken.

At this point I'll try an 825, otherwise it's an ASUS with a tomatousb and urlsnarf.  I'd really prefer something working out of the box though.

Let us know if the 825 exhibits this...I'll try on a 857 and see if this happens there. If they don't this could be a FW issue on the 826L.

I would recommend phone contacting level 2 or higher.

What browser do you use? Does this happen with other browsers like Opera or FF?

Only tested IE and Chrome.  The "happens when browsing" is a lot more hit and miss.  The behavior is definite and real, it's just not consistent.  It's easy to write off as random glitches until you change the settings back on the router and the all the glitches stop.

Let us know if the 825 does the same. I'm hoping it wont.  ;)

So I used the same steps in post #4 and used IE9, went to GoToMyPC.com and had a successful speedtest.net result using my DIR-857:

Let us know what the DIR-825 does. I think this is localized to the 826L FW.

The 825 works OK.  It's version of web access logs only gives the domain though.  There is also some weirdness with policy interactions where you may or may not actually get the logs as expected.

At this point I think I've decided on a tomatousb solution with urlsnarf added in.  Wrote 4 lines of script and got web access logging with full urls, referer and agent info.  I would have preferred an out of the box solution, but I spent less time with the custom firmware than I did trying to test the boxed solution.
