Networking Help / Advice
« on: October 09, 2010, 12:43:34 PM »

I have a home network where I do file sharing.

I have my router in one part of the house, and I run a wire through the wall into my media room. I was wondering if all i need is a simple switch to make that 1 wire in the media room be able to hook several comps into?

Right now I been using like routers behind routers and I think it confuses the file sharing so I can't access files off a comp if it is connected to a different router than the ones my other comps are on even though the router is connected to the main router's LAN.

wow, multiple routers..LOL i can see where it might get confusing. Typically only one router is needed for a network system. Off that you can set up a switch, 4 to 24 port, off the router to connect up multiple devices and PCs. You can even daisy chain the switches to connect up and run longer chains if needed. Example, my network has the Modem, Router and 24 port switch in my office. From my 24 port switch I run to various devices in my office, a 2nd office and to another switch in the living room that connects my 2nd xbox and DVR. I could go farther but eventually the network will be moving to a different part the house.

So I would recommend get back to a single router for the main router and daisy chain what you need off of it and install switches for connecting other devices around the house. Hope this helps. Let us know.

haha yea.... the reason why I use routers is cuz they are just older routers i've had in the past or I have gotten them from family members who don't use it anymore. I just thought routers itself were technically capable to act as a switch / access point or w/e.

Also, I was wondering if there is a specific someone to call if I want to have cables ran thru my house's walls.

Well you can use them if you want to, just use the LAN ports and don't connect the WAN port on each, I think you have to turn off the DHCP services in each too. Is simpler to install switches. I would look in the yellow pages for wiring services or something along those lines. Depends on what services are available in your area. I know I just did a wiring job, interesting. Not sure if I'd do that full time LOL. I wish I was closer I could at least give a look. Let us know how it goes.
