Title: DNS 320 and OS X 10.6
Post by: cocomo on January 09, 2011, 09:27:46 AM
Hi,

does anyone have the DNS 320 running correctly with OS X. I have one and can't seem to get it to work using Samba or AFP. On both share it will just hang when trying to access then.

Windows machines can access the share without any issue at all?

Hi,

"Glad" to hear I'm not alone with this problem.... I've been trying to get the DNS-320 work with OS X for a few days but have a lot of problems with it. I'm running OS X 10.6.6.

I can mount the NAS by SMB in Finder and it is possible to copy files. But when I try to copy a folder with files inside, the folder is created on the NAS but no files. Instead Finder hangs until I force it to quit. Haven't found any solution for this. Also, the browsing on the NAS is very slow with SMB.

I have also tried AFP but this doesn't work well either. With AFP (mounted in "mount server" in finder) it is possible to copy files and folders, at least small folders. I tried copying a few larger filer (around 700mb each) and the copying looked OK until about 50-60% was completed, then suddenly the AFP crashed. Once AFP crashed it is not possible to mount it again. I have a Windows computer as well so I accessed the NAS from windows and deleted all files in the directory .AppleDB in the root of the share that crasched. When this is done I can connect again but the problem re-appears as soon as I copy a large file again.

I have tried both over LAN and Wifi but there is no difference apart from the speed.

Last but not least, the Time Machine donīt work either. I can see the disk in Time Machine but when I select it for backup the process starts, Time Machine says something like "Connecting to disk" in about a minute, then it stops and reports an error.

I am so far very dissappointed with the device but hope someone can help to solve these issues. I hope there is simple solution to the problems or at least a new firmware on the way!

Anyone who can help with these problems?

Rgrds, Benny

It fair to say you are having exactly the same issues as I am. I'm trying to work some things out.

Sounds good, please let me know if you find something!

I am right now trying to access the NAS by the last option, NFS. So far I found out it's required to have the full path to a specific folder in the NFS setup to be able to connect, the share isn't enough. the full path to a share in a Raid 1 setup is /mnt/HD/HD_a2/share.

Right know OS X says I don't have permission to see the contents of the folder... Perhaps my mistake.

I really like the device from my Windows PC but it has to work from the MAC to be usable for me.

OK so I got the NFS function running in OS X.

I am right now trying to copy a bunch of files, around 15GB data only to try it. It has so far copied 3GB and everything looks OK!

If anyone is interested I have written a small guide here:

Start by enabling NFS in the DNS-320. Open the web-interface to the DNS and do that.

Still in the web-interface go to Network shares and modify or create a new share. Follow the guide through and make sure to select NFS. When you reach the NFS details, in host, enter your computer's (That would be your Mac's) IP-adress without any slashes, only xxx.yyy.zzz.xxx. On the same page, tick the box write.

Then it is important to find the right path to your share. Go to the Mac, open finder and go to "Open Folder". In there write (Use your own NAS IP-address) /net/192.168.2.192/. The finder will open and show the path structure for you. In my case with Raid1 it was 192.168.2.192/mnt/HD/HD_a2/share. Be careful with the characters, it might be important as this is a linux box...

Now you are set to follow the instructions in this link:

http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/mac/?p=430&tag=content;leftCol Edit 20110113: There is a typo in the guide, Rsize value is wrong. I did some trial and error and the best value seems to be 8192.

I hope this helps someone! My solution still looks solid, having copied 9 gb by now!

I am though still wanting help to get the other functions running as they should with my Mac!!

Thank you both for posting your experiences and what you have learned.  We have a D-Link unit servicing both Windows and OS X machines and all information is helpful.

The DNS-320 in not available in the United States, but it looks interesting.  The increased memory and processor speed, along with published capabilities, makes it look like a better long term option than the DNS-323.  Thank you for being the pioneers.

Yep I've got this working now using CFS. Seems to be the only solution for the moment if you are using OS X 10.6

Hello cocomo, good that it works!

What speed do you get? I get about 20 mb/s both up and down through gigabit LAN and about 7-8 mb/s by 300 mbit wireless. It seems a bit slower than from Windows although stabile, I could copy 300 GB data yesterday without any problems.

I did a few changes in my earlier description.

I changed the rsize value from the link in my guide to be 8192, that seems to give the best performance.

The setup seems better with the "Ignore "Set User ID Privileges" switched off.

Also if you use both wired and wireless LAN on the Mac you could add more than one IP as host in the NAS by simply entering all addresses with a space between each. Edit 20110113: My mistake, this didn't work. Only the latest entered IP-address could be used.

Tried to get Time Machine running to an NFS disk but this seems impossible to do. At least I couldn't find a way for this.

Apart from the quite technical NFS connection the DNS-320 is so far useless for Mac. SMB, AFP and Time Machine enabled AFP is at the moment very unstable, at least if you have OS X 10.6.6.

I guess we now have to wait for the next move from D-link.

Anyone who have a different experience?

Hi!

Got an DNS-320 me to. Is it possible that D-LINK will come up with a solution? Right now i have to acess my dns320 from my pc, and i'm not really ok with that..

Hello dream_theater_,

If you like you could always try the NFS guide earlier in the thread, it works OK to be able to use the device from the Mac at all.

I tried to do that, but after your instructions i had some problems with the information in the link you posted. These two:

"

3.      For the remote NFS URL, use nfs://[hostname]/[export]; for example: nfs://fileserver.mydomain.com/srv.

"
How do i know what to change hostname and export with?
"
4.      For the local mount location, use something like /nfs/fileserver.

"

Use something like..?

VERY interesting to hear about the new firmware! Did you get any details?

For the remote NFS URL I wrote (change to your own NAS IP-address and sharename) NFS://192.168.2.192/mnt/HD/HD_a2/share. Please see my other post about how to determine the full link to the share as you might have a different setup of disks. For the local mount location if you use /nfs/fileserver then OS X will create this as a folder on your Mac which you can see in the finder by looking at your system HD.

This is important, NFS WILL NOT be seen as a regular network share. You access the disk through the folder named as the local mount name.

Finally i got it.... Thank you so much!

Yes and about the new firmware. The main changes concern the interface, but now when they are aware about the "OS X problem", they will work out a solution for that as well. They asked me if they were allowed to call me if they had any questions (for some reason?:)), and they told me they were on it right now. Obviously they experienced the same problem when they tried to use a mac.

I wonder why they don't try their new hardware with at least ONE mac computer?

Yep, seems very strange that it doesn't work on Mac since the device is sold as Time Machine compatible... I really really hope they solve the issues in this firmware.

The D-link support says today that the new firmware will be released during January or February, no specific date is known right now. Let's hope the release will solve the mac issues... Apparently there will be changes in the web interface to look more like the boxee with apps. Interesting!

Probably it won't work for other sets. Sorry to bring your hopes up.

Hi tarblak, I've been following your posts for days and followed instructions down to the letter. After setting up the nfs, then trying to open on my Mac I get the error 'the folder cannot be opened as you don't have permission to see it's contents'. Any help would be appreciated, I really like the product when using with a pc, but when I get mac out I end up pulling my hair out.
Thanks

I got that error also when I set it up. I think (if I remember correct) that restart of the mac solved the problem. Otherwise, could it be that you have set permissions to the share on the NAS? You have to have the share wide open.

Hi there everyone! Ive had success with the NFS setup, thanks to Tarblak, but can find no way to use this for a time machine backup. The AFP service seems useless for this, I think its something to do with the permissions on the NAS, I was just wondering if anyone had had any luck?

Considering that i bought the DNS-320 primarily as a backup server for my 3 PC's its more than a little annoying that the DNS-320 backs up my windows 7 and ubuntu machines, but not the mac. The DNS-320 is advertised specifically as working with time machine. I do hope there will be a useful firmware update soon, COME ON D-LINK don't make me do a return.

Any help would be appreciated...

I think the beta firmware has appeared on the uk ftp site

ftp://ftp.dlink.co.uk/dns/DNS-320/firmware/

edit: successfully updated on my dns 320

interface is different but smb and afp still do not work in os x 10.6

I just tested 2.00 build 06 (the one from UK site) and both SMB and AFP work fine on 10.6. For AFP do the following;

1. Go into Management > Application Management > AFP Service.
  - Disable AFP
  - Save Settings (then click OK)
  - Enable AFP (then click OK)

2. Go to Applications at the top
  - Click Local Backups
  - Click Time Machine
  - Check Time Machine
  - Setup Time Machine share
  - Check your Time Machine on MacOS.

I was fully capable of connecting to both SMB/AFP and having time machine show up in the list of backup options.

Here's another location for the 2.00b6 fw, with release notes.

ftp://ftp.dlink.fr/DNS/DNS-320/Firmware/Firmware_2.00/ (http://ftp://ftp.dlink.fr/DNS/DNS-320/Firmware/Firmware_2.00/)

I'm on OSX 10.6.6, and testing the beta fw right now. The 1.00 was really buggy for me, hanging the Finder when using both AFP and SMB.

Is it possible to disable the SMB service altogether?

Edit: Okay, I enabled UPnP on my router, maybe this has an effect on things? Then I manually connected to the AFP-share, instead of just clicking on it in the sidebar (which for some reason always connected as CIFS), and it seems to work better.

Hello,

sorry everyone for my bad English, I am a French user

I contacted technical support dlink, January 1 ... to tell them that the dns-320 was a bulls***, a time machine service but no support for osx ... :o
He told me they were aware of the problem and that the new firmware would fill gaps, results: no change except the interface!
They therefore recommend me to do a reset (already done) and formatting the hard drive because it works for them ...
what do you think?
In addition, I asked for 1 month the exact version of integrated torrent client, no response, you know it?

Well I just did a full reset and installed a fresh drive. I'm still having the problems I described previously.

Using the new firmware I've used time machine. All i did was enable time machine and AFP. You must set time machine to show networked drives. Do this by typing the following command into terminal.

defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1

After this ensure services are enabled and attempt to connect to the drive using time machine.

Hope this helps, even if you are french!! :D

Has anyone had problems with an NFS mount to OS X 10.6 after the firmware update, I seem to have completely lost the ability to reconnect to the NAS. Any help would be greatly appreciated

First complete transfer of 90 GO !!
Great great , but for this, i must activate afp (of course) AND Timemachine, after dns320 will automount an networkdrive afp on finder... :)

That should work, but i found it best to create a dedicated share folder just for time machine. I found a significant speed increase doing this when there are multiple PC's using the DNS.

Ok it is working now after creating an actual share volume to be used.

I do however have four instances of shared devices in finder.

NAS-1_AFP_Volume_1
NAS-1
NAS-2
NAS

The first three show as "Mac" servers, NAS shows as a PC Server. Only the NAS-1_AFP_Volume_1 actually works in OS X 10.6

Hi,
As the previous message, with the FW2.00 beta, I can finally use my ShareCenter with my OSX computers, with AFP (Time Machine works too).
But SMB still doesn't work, so I have in Finder the link to NAS , NAS-1 which are still buggy ... Is there (or will there be in future firmware) a way to, either repair SMB under OSX, or have the choice to completely disable it ?

using the latest firmware update (2.0b i think)

Yer that seems to be a serious compatibility issue with OS X, by far the best solution is to set up a NFS share (instructions are in this thread thanks to Tarblak). This works very well, but there are issues if you have multiple macs wanting to access the same share.

The problem there is that i cannot find a way to add multiple IP's for the hosts, as one is needed for each computer that will access the share. For the moment i have to change the IP manually if i want my MBP to access the share. This also gives rise to a problem that you have to have no user privileges set to use NFS, but you cannot disable CIFS, so the share becomes accessible to anyone on the network.

I hope someone will find solutions for these problems. I've said it before and ill say it again, the DNS-320 was sold as OS X compatible! Seems to me very little testing was done on OS X as many problems arise immediately when you connect a mac to the DNS. Come on D-Link sort it out!!

Hi,

I use DNS 320(with 2X2TB WD HDD) with MAC and WinXp.

In XP work good, but in MAC OSX the file's size wrong. Every files is 264MB, if I see in the info write the real size.

I tried install the HDDs, but nothing.
