Title: Slow Upload speed to external drive
Post by: Damjan on December 15, 2018, 04:59:01 AM
Hi everybody,

I'am expereincing speed issue, when I upoad files to external drive.
I have drive HD My passport connected to USB 3.0. port. Download speed is more than 60MB/s but upload speed is arround 6 to 7MB/s.

I allready tried with different external drive and get similiar result. Upload speed was in both cases around 7MB/s.

Does anybody know what slows uploud speed?

Model Name: DIR-882
Hardware Version: A1
Firmware Version: 1.11

What is the size of this USB drive? Does it have it's own power supply?

Hi,

I am from Slovenia, Europa.

I tried two external drives with and without power supply, same results.

1TB, USB 2.0. own power supply.
4TB, USB .3.0. without additional power supply.

Can you try a 4Tb drive with a power supply?
What happens if you test with a different PC?

Post by: Damjan on December 17, 2018, 09:05:38 AM
4Tb drive doesn't have plug for additional power supply.

I tried on 2 PC's, similar results.

It is a big difference between download and upload speed.

Download speed on both discs is different but upload speed is the same on both discs regardless one is usb 2.0. and the other is 3.0. And one is plug in usb 2.0. and the other in usb 3.0.

Looks like upload limitation ??

Ya seems to be a problem here.
I'll pass this on to D-Link for review.

Hi!

I'm jumping on this.

Just bought a DIR-882 and connected a brand new externally powerted 4TB drive. No matter how I do, I can't get more than 7MB/S write speed to the drive. As the original poster mentioned, read speeds are about 60MB/s. It would take weeks just to fill drive..

Seeing the first post was over a year ago, are there any news about this or is it simply a technical limitation?

I've had this issue for the last year. No matter what drive is plugged into the USB 3.0 port, the transfer rate is horrible.

I heard it's because of the lower amount of RAM in the router. Due to that, the transfer rate is throttled for write speed. Not sure how valid that is.

However, there are times that I get 27 mb/s but that's once in a blue moon. Non dependent on who else is on the network.

Ok, I'll bite. What is the OS you guys are using when accessing the USB drive.
How are you accessing the drive? Map drive in Explorer? What path are you using?
What model drives and sizes are you using? I have a 1.5Tb USB 3.0 drive with power adapter here. NTFS if I remember correctly.
I noticed mine doesn't appear in the Network/Computer however it appears as a media device under Network/Media Devices in Windows.

Yes, through Explorer.

Sadly, I've had the same setup with a different manufacturers router and speeds were much higher.

Same USB 3.0 Seagate Slim BackupPlus 1.5 TB drive as well.

hello

i have same problem ,  read are ok , but write block at 7Mo/s .
just a fun , during transfert if i change "QoS" write up at 9 Mo/s during 2-3 sec and return to 7Mo/s

i think i use amazon return, not a real USB3.0 port

PS: tested ftp, samba, usb 2.0, usb 3.0, wifi, ethernet ,  no change :(

Questions from D-Link engineer:

What kind of application that customer used for which router feature (DLNA, Samba or FTP)?

How did customer measure the transfer rate?

Using Wi-Fi or Ethernet? Are they the same speed?

The D-Link engineer should choose his questions better ; there is no "write" speed which can be tested with DLNA as it's only read activity by a DLNA client from a DLNA server ( router in our case )
OTOH using both Samba shares and FTP access the write speed from a client to the router's USB drive is capped at ~7 MB/s most of the time ( in very occasional  situations for very brief periods of time I get ~27 MB/s with the same 2 USB HDDs I perform all tests , both of them USB powered exclusively ) ; considering the low write speed neither Eth or wireless connection makes a difference ; also the type of client ( Windows or Linux ) doesn't make any difference . In my case speed was assessed just by copying large files to and from the USB drive attached to the router .
The read speed is however satisfactory @ ~45 MB/s .
At first I assumed the poor performance was due to lower power supplied ( than the USB spec ) but as others are experiencing the same write speeds with self powered drives this is probably wrong .

Thanks furry.

I replied back to the D-Track (ticket) with everyone's information. Seems like the write speed is capping at 7MB/s and get bursts at 27MB/s. Sounds like a limitation but they will check with the vendor.

Remember the router is not going to be as powerful as a PC or dedicated NAS. The router has to process a lot and I am assuming the USB ports are low priority. The router has to inspect incoming/outgoing traffic, routing, NAT, encryption, WIFI, Ethernet, rules, etc. So it could be a lack of memory/processing power that is slowing it down.

I wonder if connecting 1 PC to the router without internet or anything else connected with smart connect off if "write" speeds would be better.  If not sounds like a chipset/firmware limitation.

FYI, my DIR-882 was off line from the ISP modem and was just the 1 PC and the USB drive when I did my speed tests. So the system was not really under any load.

Samba
Looked at the File Explorer file copy screen which indicated the speeds.

WIreless, on 5 Ghz band, 20 feet away and tested close up too, I think 5 feet away.

I heard from reviews that performance issues could be traced back to the low amount of memory in the router.

D-Link HQ has replicated the issue and have sent it to the vendor/engineers to see if this is a chip limitation or something fixable with firmware. I do not expect a response back until after Chinese new year (they are off work 1/23-1/29).

Same speeds.

Seagate Backup Plus. USB 3.

Before pointing to the drive. I've had a Netgear, Asus and another DLink router average 27+ Mb per second on the same file transfer.

Aside from this small issue, I love that the router is incredibly stable. This is what has made me keep it.

Then maybe could they put a resource monitor for CPU/RAM to know when the available resources are consumed/occupied  and maybe even what process are doing this (top 5 at least) ; maybe users are activating features they could live without if it would improve USB disk performance if they knew what these are .
Or just leave us figure it out by ourselves by giving us root SSH/Telnet access to our devices ( block SSH/Telnet in the firewall from the WAN interface if the reason is to not have the routers hacked )

In that case I would like to see results from the DIR 2660 router which is basically the same router just with more NAND (128 MB vs 16) and more RAM (256 MB vs 128 MB) .
If that one performs well then it's indeed a resource issue ; if not then maybe software .

Testing my 2660:
Read seems to hover around upper 40MBs.

Write seem to hover around upper 20MBs

Speeds were immediate and constant. Didn't see any thing near single digit MBs at all.

My opinion (not speaking for D-Link) Remember the USB function on most routers on the market is secondary. If you need to stream high-quality movies or a lot of data, it is much better to get a NAS or connect a USB drive to a PC and run software. Expecting a router to function and perform the same as a NAS is unrealistic, especially if you have more than 10 wireless devices connected. Having a ton of rules, port forwarding, QoS enabled, etc eats up the memory and CPU.
Title: Re: Slow Upload speed to external drive
Post by: me_iauras on March 25, 2020, 10:14:00 AM
@FurryNutz 10x for the swift reply/test ; those numbers seem almost identical to what I was getting (so I'm  guessing that's about as much as the CPU can handle in terms of storage duties ) when it worked as it should , mostly right after connecting devices ( as far as I remember read performance doesn't get degraded or at least not by much ) . The real test would be to leave the USB drive/HDD connected for roughly 24 h and repeat the test .
Regarding the use of dedicated NAS devices ,  @GreenBay42 you're preaching to the choir ( QNAP 251+ owner here ) ; it would just have been nice to be able to recommend it to others who might need only basic SMB sharing features but with a decent performance (15-20 MB/s write/read sustained performance would have been more than sufficient for most people's needs ) as otherwise it's wireless performance is still top notch for the price .

I'll leave the 2660 and USB drive on today and check back tomorrow. I had turned it off so I just turned it back on. Nothing connected. I'll connect up my wired PC tomorrow again and re-test to see if anything changes.

I can't fully test the 2660 out live as I have other routers and wifi I'm currently using. This one test with with the wifi disabled. I'll check tomorrow again and run a quick test with wifi enabled to see if anything changes.

So for those 882 users who need USB drive support with good performance, you'll need to find other alternatives to resolve the 882's USB drive issue, either find a different method to connect your USB drives to a networking adapter or try out a DIR-2660. That model seems stable and solid for USB drive support.
Sounds like D-Link can't fix the 882 issue. Is a shame.  :-\

I bought this router to cover the other half of my Home, It's pretty good but speeds are inconsistent and fluctuates between 380-500 mbps.

Well regarding NAS, It's a regret for the owners of this model. I'm thinking of getting the EA8500 Linksys next if in case I plan to sell this.

Since R7800 is out of stock everywhere, I might give the Linksys a shot. TP-Link is cheap and ASUS has Overheating issues so I'll avoid them.

The 882 does have the one fault. Other than this. The 882 is pretty solid.

Regarding the USB drive, USB drives are not considered NAS. NAS refers to actual Network Access Storage devices. A device that has two or more internal HDD and is connected via network LAN cable. For some users with USB storage needs with this router, I would highly recommend reviewing some actual NAS devices. You can get into NAS moderately inexpensively. I've been using NAS for several years now and have not looked back. So much more configurable and flex it over USB drives. Lots of features too. I just installed a 16Tb NAS last weekend. Going to be used for Data Backup with redundancy. I wish D-Link still produced NAS.  :(

I gave up on Linksys years ago. After there FW update debacle on there WRT1900AC router, that was it for me. Belkin owns Linksys. I would not recommend anything TP-Link due to there nefarious business practices.  :-X
I've never had any heating problems with my two ASUS routers. My GT-AX11000 works wonderfully.

Just because it works sometimes then doesn't others doesn't mean it's not a HW issue. Many HW issues contribute to seeing odd problems.
If D-Link confirmed it's a HW issue then it is what it is. And sounds like something they didn't catch early on.

What mfr and model # USB drive is connected to the router?

Wondering if Windows OS/Explorer and the USB connection could be seeing problems where actual backup software may not. Would have to test other USB drives as well.
