A brief update:.

The issue repeated itself about 4 weeks ago (please see the very first msg in the thread), so I was able to exchange my router for another one of the same revision & built.  Updated to 1.09 firmware.  The new one ran just fine, until again just last night, the same issue arose.

So I' guess if the first one was possibly defective, I doubt the second one would be.  Same exact symptom.  And no, I refuse to waste my time with SC on.

Once I turned the router off then back on, every device auto-reconnected to the 2.4Ghz SSID.  All of the devices to 2.4Ghz lost the connection (but one could see the 2.4 Ghz network SSID from all of the devices), so I left the system / router untouched for 7 hours (overnight) to see if somehow after a while things would go back to normal.   However, none of devices were able to reconnect until I manually rebooted the router.

My current thought process:  I may have to try another brand as I am very disappointed with Netgear (but not people on this forum who really do try).  I am sure that I'm not the only dealing with this.

I presume this maybe a environment thing. If you have tried 2 routers and they are both experiencing the same thing, then something in your environment possibly. You need to enable SC and test.

Your currently the only one posting about this...

Environment, I see.  Well, the fact that no other electronic devices were added or changed during the last 6 months at our households (except for addition of two new Samsung S7 phones, instead of S4), I am not sure what this "environment" issue is.   It did not rain the night of the disconnection.  My other devices connected to other bandwidths did not die.

I still think it's a D-LINK issue.  Once the new Linksys AC5400 Tri-Band Gigabit Router arrives, and a month goes by, we shall see.

I promise to follow-up.

Netgear? You sure this is a Netgear or D-Link router?  ??? Is this model the DIR-890L? Please confirm.
This is a D-Link forum, not a Netgear forum.  ::)

My bad.  I meant to say D-Link.  I fixed it in the original message above yours.  I used to have Netgear, now D-Link and something tells me it might have to become something else.

Please enable SC and test. Please.

Did your Netgear router experience this as well?

mystiky,

Disconnects have been reported with the 5Ghz radios but not with 2.4Ghz.  Are most of your devices on 2.4Ghz frequency band? could you try 5Ghz if possible?  and you are correct, you don't need to take advantage of the Smart Connect function if you don't want to, it is only there for those that may not want to manually configure the 3 independent 2.4/5Ghz radios of the router. You are free to assign which wireless client connects to what radio by setting up individual SSIDs and attaching to those as you please.

I had the problem in the beginning, for now, I have been using the reboot schedule to sort of work around the issue.  You can find the Auto Reboot configuration under Management -> System Admin -> System -> Auto Reboot Configuration.

The problem with the wireless disconnects has ben seen to follow iOS devices although is may be possible that other devices may also see the issue. Please let us know what devices are disconnecting  and describe the symptoms if any in particular.

In my case, trying to connect the device back to the wireless network prompts for the Wi-Fi password again, even though this is part of the WiFi profile already part of my iOS device. Entering the correct password/passphrase for the network will show an "Incorrect password, try again"  message until one of these two action happened: 1- Reboot the router or 2- Turn off wireless on the device and turn back on.  Again this did not happen immediately after the update but about 4 to 6 days of heavy Wi-Fi usage, both on 2.4 and 5Ghz networks.

If you could,  please share the details of what you are seeing.

Thank you!

New ACER ASPIRE ES1-571
Refurb 890L with 1.08, upgraded immediately to 1.09.
My 5Ghz laptops connect wirelessly without issue daily.
Had laptop (2.4 Ghz) off for a few days, turned on tonight.
Could not connect.

Qualcomm Ahteros AR956x (Have only seen 72.2 Mbps connections).

I turned off "Smart Connect".... I'm guessing this is almost equivalent of rebooting the router.. and laptop connected just fine (@ 72.2 Mbps).

I don't think anything else was connected to 2.4Ghz... I have a wired DNR-202L on it.

The laptop will be wired, but wanted no issues with wireless upon deployment to client site.

If you turn on SC again, will the LT reconnect?

If you turn on SC again, will the

I'll try tonight.

Also as a side note,  I even tried forgetting the connection in the laptop, and recreating it. Didn't work.
I probably should have tried another 2.4 device, but didn't bother as it was late.

Let us know if you can test a different device. I have several devices on mine. Mines running SC enabled. I do see random disconnects with my DCS-933L however infrequent.  ::)

Booted up and no problems connecting in NON-SC mode.

Logged into router and turned SC on.  Played around on DNR-202L for a little.

Reboot laptop several times... connected just fine.

I think I'm going to have to not touch the laptop for a few days as previously before trying again.

my last update on this issue

I will make this short and brief.  The only reason I am posting this is NOT to bash D-Link, but to offer an option to others, if they come across the same issue that I was having for over 7 months of frustration, without any resolve.

As promised in my last few postings, I decided to try a router from another company.  I went with the Linksys EA9500 AC5400 Router.  After 5 weeks of usage, I have not experienced any sudden disconnects issues on Wi-Fi, which was a regular issue with the 890L after 2 weeks of uptime.  While I appreciate FurryNutz and others help in trying to solve the issue on my DIR-890L, comments such as "it may be an environment issue" or "set up your router to re-boot every day" did not move the yard stick for me to keep my DIR890-L.   It seems like D-Link, like many others is content in putting out a "good enough" product that holds it's place until something new is released.  At that time, the users of the older product are pretty much forgotten (1 firmware update in 9 months?!?!).

Everyone thankfully can make their own choice.  For me, it is no longer D-Link.   I really hope that someone in corporate reads this thread to see how fragile we, the end user are, when dealing with a company that has no clue how important it is to have quality control.  My first computer was in 1982, an Atari 400 with 16K and a tape recorder.  I've seen what customer support and quality control can do.

Please remember, I tried two different brand new 890L's, and had the exact same problem with both.  So the issue is NOT on my end.

I wish all of you the best in your endeavors, and I hope that maybe one day I will got back to the D-Link brand.  But now, I move on to Linksys.

Thanks for the update and feed back.

We can only presume this may have been either a environment issue or possible bad batch of units maybe local to your area. Others, including me have had good operation with v1.09 FW and this unit overall. Just because you tried two different units of the same, doesn't mean the entire line is bad. D-Link works hard to make sure problems do get fixed and of course like most companies, not perfect. Over all it takes time to develop test and bring fixes to customers. There are many factors in routers and Wifi and sometimes it hard to narrow down everyone problems weather maybe environment or actual HW failure. The only current issues right now are in recent FW updates in v1.10 with are seeing real issues from users. Reverting back to v1.09 has resolved this as a current work around.

Well I don't agree with "It seems like D-Link, like many others is content in putting out a "good enough" product that holds it's place until something new is released.  At that time, the users of the older product are pretty much forgotten (1 firmware update in 9 months?!?!)." statement, if this is your first time working Linksys, then your in for a real wake up. D-Link is not like this. D-Link works hard during the life span of there products to work out problems. Linksys on the the other had does what you stated as I know for a fact. I bought a WRT1900AC a couple of years ago as I was helping there users out in there forum setting. The entire WRT line has seen a roller coaster ride of problems and FW updates have never resolved any of the issues seen, or if they did, the fixed a few and presented other problems. FW updates were sparse to say the least then when we had hopes of seeing updates, Linksys would come out with a new Rev on the WRT line and not update the prior Rev or continue to update any of the prior Revs. They did Rev A1 and A2, then they came out with a WRT1900ACS Rev A1 then just recently A2. The 1900AC Rev A1 and A2 hasn't seen a update in over a year now and they still have problems in the UI and in the WiFi driver. The entire FW update list was very limited. I think there was a total of 5 updates for Rev A1s. The EA9200 only saw about 3 that I was able to track. This was my experience along with a ton of users in there forums. I know, I was moonlighting for a while there. Look a the forms there, There's long historical forum threads that does over 100 pages with user issues.
Your fooling your self if you think D-Link is only putting out "good enough" product. IMO Linksys is the worst at this and there track record shows it. It's a shame too. Linksys back in the day was better than "good enough". After Cisco bought them things were good however not as great. Then a few years back, Cisco sold Linksys to Beklin. And since then, it's been "good enough" and seems like there development and testing is not as mature as it once was. I still like there HW look and feel.

There are some users that have had good experiences however and I do hope you will with your EA series router. "I've seen what customer support and quality control can do." Wait till you experience Linksys.  ::)

Good luck in your endeavours. We wish you the best.

Just a quick update.  Two months of usage of my Linksys (Belkin) and zero issues.  Not gloating but perhaps they finally got their act together, or at least for their high-end products.

There was just a new revision released of the firmware, and all I did was upgrade it without any resets and reboots.  Seems to be working also.

I hope that this "new" release for DLink folks also finally works for you the way its supposed to.
