Title: DHP-W306AV manual setup - Static IP and miscellaneous
Post by: jmaverick on February 16, 2013, 01:32:40 AM
:) Hi, got a pair of DHP-W306AV. I want to give them a static IP. Choosing static IP shows a window with IP (what I want di assign), subnet mask, gatewy (the IP address of may router) and DNS: I guess I have to write the DNS I use on my router, but what is the use of a DNS for the PL? WiFI setup: channel, better assigna auto or specify a channel (six)? WPS: I don't care about this, so I want to unclick the PIN, any harm? Please advise, thx.

Link>Welcome! (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=41537.0)
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=47512.0) version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS (http://vonage.nmhoy.net/qos.html) or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set Time and Time Zone under Tools/Time.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=48327.0)

Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?

Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer (http://www.metageek.net/) to find out. How many
?
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=50738.0) Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.

Hi, so many questions..my router i s a TP-Link 8840 V 1.1, my region is Europe Italy, DSL, no modem, stand alone router. I do not want to manage Dynamic IP for a numaber of reasons. Any device in my LAN has its own Static IP, with one exception: a Samsung Android Tablet, to which it's impossible to assign Static IP. I went through the manula setup of the two D-Link PL, one used wifi only, the other used wifi and ethernet (linket to a mySkyHD decoder). My Lan has 3 wifi devices: a D-Link DAP-1360 connected ethernet to the router and 2  DHP-W306AV, each wifi device is located in a different level of a 3 storey house. I assigned Staic IP, used the  primary and secondary DNS of my ISP provider, and defined the wifi section to the 3 wifi devices in the same way, same SSID, same key, same options. Decided not to use WPS, since I did not understand well its advantage and its configuration, only leaving clicked the autogenrated PIN. Now I can see everywhere in my home the same wifi while I move from a room to another and from a storey to another. All seems to work fine. Now I'm able to locate through my browser in the same Lan domain the 2 PL. Now wha is WPS for? Better to use it? How to configure it? DNS, it seems that I wan not mistaken, so is it correct to put the ISP DNS? Many thanks.
