Error when connecting to an L2TP server on DSR-250
« on: September 13, 2018, 07:07:41 AM »

I am trying to setup a L2TP VPN server on DSR-250 and access it via external network.

When trying to access it from a Windows 10 machine I am getting the "The L2TP connection attempt failed because security policy for the connection was not found" error.

The router's WAN has a real static Internet IP (no NAT) and the router is receiving pings from external network (after the proper IGMP configuration).

My VPN-server settings: http://forum.dlink.ru/download/file.php?id=10380&mode=view

My general firewall settings: http://forum.dlink.ru/download/file.php?id=10382&mode=view

My VPN-passthrough firewall settings: http://forum.dlink.ru/download/file.php?id=10381&mode=view

A user group with the right of access via VPN and administrator rights is created on the router and one user member to this group.

I've also tried playing around with "IPSec policies": https://imgur.com/a/l6kl9fk even though I believe those have nothing to do with the L2TP server, but are rather for a different VPN-protocol only supported on Windows machines via a Shrewsoft client. I've entered the same preshared key both into the L2TP server settings and the IPSec policies page.

Still, I am getting the "The L2TP connection attempt failed because security policy for the connection was not found" error on the client side.

What should I be looking into?

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. As them about "The L2TP connection attempt failed because security policy for the connection was not found" error. I presume once this is resolved, it will work...

We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

The hardware version of DSR-250 is A2 and the version of the installed firmware is 1.09B32_RU (as you could already tell from the provided screenshots). I myself am in Germany and the router I am trying to setup and connect to is in Russia.

Have you tried updating FW? I believe there is more recent FW versions available for your A2.

Do you believe the L2TP server has never worked on the 1.09 firmware?

Is this the first time you have tired setting up L2TP connections on the DSR? If so, maybe the FW needs updating. v1.09 is 4 years old. Possible that configuration and certs are out of date or missing in older versions of FW.
I would update the FW on the A2 and try again.

ok

Do you know if the configurations of the router are going to be lost after the FW update? It's important to me since I am going to be uodating the device remotely via TeamViewer.

I don't know for sure on DSR routers as I've never had an opportunity to try one. I would do a save router config to file first before updating.
