DIR-330 unable to connect pads and phones after reset
« on: September 24, 2013, 07:39:44 AM »

I have a DIR-330 that was working fine with WPA2 security. All devices connected well.
Then a housesitter reset the modem.
Came home to find it at factory defaults.  I reset the WPA2 security.  Our laptops connect fine (one Mac and one PC), but our iPhone, Blackberry, and Blackberry Playbook will not connect.
I have tried changing the security around to WPA, WEP.  Our devices will only connect if it is unsecured.
We point the device to the network, enter the password, it tries to connect for 3 minutes (or whatever it's setting is, and then says 'cannot connect'.

Help?

      Link>
Welcome!
  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?[/b]
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Try setting Medium or Low power output settings and test again Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Web Browser Configurations
What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF? If IE 8 or 9, set compatibility mode and test again.
Try turning off these features in Chrome:
Top right corner, little bars for options > Settings > Settings (on left) > Show advanced settings.
Uncheck these:
Use a web service to help resolve navigation errors
Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar
Predict network actions to improve page load performance
Enable phishing and malware protection

I recommend that you fully turn OFF ALL devices accept for one wired LAN PC. Factory reset once more and let the router come to ready. Log in and reserve the PCs IP address and save settings. The router may ask you to reboot, let it reboot. After it comes to ready. Setup WiFi for WPA2 only and AES or TPIK only or try mixed. If your devices all support AES as a security mode, then select AES only, if not, use Mixed AES and TPIK. Ensure the channel is clear and not being used. You can manually select a channel if need. 1, 6 or 11 is recommended. Input a new SSID name, can be anything. Make it fun and easy. Give a simple password for now, you can change it later if needed. When the WiFi is set up, reboot once again to apply the settings. After the router comes to ready, turn on 1 of the devices and see if it will connect. It should. Clear out any old saved wifi profiles on the devices as these may become no longer usable. Once the device connects, then save a new profile if needed. Continue turning on the next device and test.

Keep us posted.

When I go to register the mobile devices with reserved DHCP, I get an error message that the MAC must start with 00
None of the MACs start with 00.
What to do?

1.  Where do I find this G or N mode?  Don't see it anywhere.
2.  Same for the channel width.
3.  I can set for channel 11, but what is the N?  The only thing it says with the channel settings is 802.11 b, g, or b/g mixed
4.  As mentioned, I have tried all the security modes available (WEP, WPA, WPA2).  None of them will allow our devices to connect, only the laptops.  The security settings do not involve WPA2 Personal, there are only the above-mentioned selection, or disable security. All devices can connect when security is disabled.
5.  The cipher type is TPK/AES.  It does not give me an option to change it.  The only option is PSK or EAP

Also, why does the DHCP reservations list insist on MAC numbers starting with 00: ?  It won't accept any of my machines' actual MAC numbers.

Lets give a FW update a try:
You can find the file here:
http://support.dlink.ca/ProductInfo.aspx?m=DIR-330

Please use the process here to update the router here:
FW Update Process

Please use IE or FF browser for this process. Please do a factory reset before sending the .bin file and one more after the file was received by the router and it reboots. Please use one wired LAN PC to the back of the router for this. Do not upgrade over wireless.
