Hello,

I need new router and trying to choose between DIR-645 and DIR-657. I've been looking at this forum to see what problems users got with these units and still need to find answer to 3 questions:
 
1) I thought that both of them have DLNA media servers built it before I saw FurryNutz posting that DIR-645 doesn't have DLNA, I mean this thread:

Can someone confirm or deny this information?
Just wondering why it is marked as DLNA certified (at DLNA site) and D-link website says: "Built-in Media Server DLNA compliant to stream videos, music and photos".

2) Are the drives >2TB also supported by USB port in DIR-645 and DIR-657?

3)Have someone already measured USB write/read speeds for these routers?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I actually bought a 645 after I originally wrote that post so I maybe able to help you out on this. I'll have to reconnect it and check it out. Been working with other routers lately.

Just wondering why it is marked as DLNA certified (at DLNA site) and D-link website says: "Built-in Media Server DLNA compliant to stream videos, music and photos". I would contact DLINK and confirm this with them directly. DLNA certified just means that it can handle streaming and video content. Call DLink and confirm this.

2) Are the drives >2TB also supported by USB port in DIR-645 and DIR-657? My WD 2Tb drive works on this model, the 657, 655 and 857 from my testing.

3)Have someone already measured USB write/read speeds for these routers? I haven't. If your looking for fast performance using the USB port, be aware that you'll be also using SharePort as well to connect to the drive. This and the fact that USB isn't the greatest for doing large file xfers and streaming large video data will probably less than what you expect. On any router. The USB port is good for doing small things or having a printer connected. IF your looking for constant, large data xfers, large video streaming and greater performance, your best interests is in connecting a USB drive to a PC that can work as a sever with a dedicated GB Lan network connection. I use a server and connect a couple of USB and FireWire drives to it. Steam movies and such and it also works as my main backup server as well.

Any help would be much appreciated.

At least at polish version of this website, because there is not a single word about DLNA at US version of this site. Maybe european models has more features - I know it sounds strange but I saw same thing in one of the Netgear routers.

2)About HDD capacity you misunderstand me, I meant if drives ABOVE 2TB works

3)Yeah I can imagine that it won't be a NAS-similar performance, but still I need only 6-8MB/s read speed to stream 720p/1080p videos to my TV.
Using SharePort can be avoided if I will map my drive as described here:

It would be great if you could just check if your DIR-645 can work as DLNA media server.
And if you own any 2,5TB or 3TB drive could you try to connect it the router and see if it works?

I'll check this out this evening after work. I want to say that it goes as one time I think I was configuring the Storage options, however I can't remember exactly. I'll check again though. I don't have any bigger drives that 2TB at the moment.

I'm from Poland.
Will be waiting for your reply with test results. This is the only thing which keeps me out from buying DIR-645 at the moment. Drive support limited to 2TB is normal in this kind of device. As far as I know it's because GTP format being used in HDD over 2TB capacity instead of MBR.

EDIT: One more thing, as I can see you are also owner of DIR-657 unit. Could compare those two in few words?

The 657 is pretty good too, Again it has an option for enabling DLNA and thats it, not additional options like the 645 has I believe. I does have a SD card slot.

One other thing that the 657 doesn't have and others don't have at the moment is the same QoS engine settings. On most of the DIR series, the Uplink manual settings are max at 2Mb. On the 645 and a couple of newer routers, can't remember right now however on the 645, there are settings up to 50Mb I think on the uplink. My 835 has this same option and allows up to 10mb on the uplink.

Other then that, the 657 is has been a good router over all. I think Wifi is a bit more limited since it's internal antenna however didn't notice any coverage issues on a 2 story 2200 sq ft house. Gaming was just as good as the the other routers if set up using the QoS rules for XBL found in the FAQ Library.

Hello, I also have a quick question related to this;

I am using a DIR-645 and have a WD MyBook Mirror Edition attached to it. I am able to brows the drive using the SharePort Plus utility, however when I attempt to enable either the DLNA server or the iTunes server i get the error "No Storage Device"

You should be able to see it after you power off the router, connect the USB drive cable to the router. Ensure that power AC adapter is connected to the USB drive and it's ON or in standby. Power ON the router and after it's ready, DLNA and iTunes were enabled and settings were saved. Initially I did see the the message that no drive was detected so I powered OFF the router a 2nd time then powered on and then it worked. I set my logging on the router before turning it off to capture status and critical. I captured the following:
DIR-645 A1 v1.02
OSX 10.8.2
WD My Book 2007 2Tb USB drive.
DLNA and iTunes Server enabled on router.
Logging captured the following lines:

Opened iTunes and selected the DIR-645 in the left side pane and 4 songs appeared in the right side pain and playable

My Book is formatted with WD RAID SW for NTFS and is configured for maximum space.

Unfortunately Shareport v4.20 fails to connect to the drive. I tried both 10.6.8 and 10.8.2. I believe I had sent information regarding this previously to D-Link about this. I'll have to check my history. This maybe a compatibility issue since both OSX 10.6.8 thru 10.8.2 are newer OSs and since service packs have been updated on OSX, might have become incompatible with SP and SP needs to be updated at some level which D-Link needs to review and resolve.

I would ask you to phone contact D-Link support, level 2 and ask them about this issue and see if there is any information regarding this and any fixes to SP. I'll bring this to my contact at D-Link again.

I received email support back from D-Link, the want me to reset the router and set it up again and see if it helps resolve SP not working and mounting the drive correctly. I'll be trying this out today.

Doing a factory reset on the router and setting it up using the wizard fails to get SP and the USB drive to connect properly. IT sees the drive however displays a failed to connect message in the browser.

Just FYI, I connected to my DIR-657 with my Mac Book Pro and the 2Tb USB drive and SP saw and connected to the drive correctly.

Where you able to get the drive connected correctly and working for DLNA and iTunes? Mine is working accept for using Shareport with it in MAC OSX.

Let us know if you got any results.

If anyone else is seeing Shareport problems and using USB drives in Mac OSX, please post your details.

So I called about SharePort v4 not working on 645 with USB drive on OSX 10.6 and 10.8. Works connected to a  DIR-857/657 using same devices and SP version. I called and after 53 minutes of going thru 3 people, Kim said he would open a report and should see possible fix in next FW release. I also injected the problem with setting the router to 192.168.7.1 and he said it might be the same for 192.168.7.1 issue. He seemed a bit rushed to end the phone call after trying to figure out that SP was not working at all with current FW on the 645. He said FW might be released this year. Not sure if EU will be included. We can only hope.
