Disconnects / Stops Sending Data
« on: March 29, 2010, 12:11:44 AM »

Hi, I'm having a serious problem with this router where it will stop sending packets for a couple minutes every hour or so it seems. I don't recall having this problem with my previous Linksys BEFSR41 router.

Here's what I found in the router's log:

I don't know whether my problem is the same as yours, exactly. But I have had the DGL-4100 for less than a week, and I am noticing lots of dropped Skype calls and data transfer freezes. I never had that problem with the DLink DI-604 which it replaces.

Same here. I get Skype freezes on audio and video for both Skype 2 Skype and Skype to landline. Never got this with my good old LinkSys WRT54. I only bought a D-link based on reviews and in anticipation that it would be much better than my eight year old LinkSys router. So far not.

It's really annoying calling Skype now. Surely it must be some setting that I'm missing... ???

Seeing how old this is I doubt there was any resolution but I'm curious none the less.

I've been using my DGL-4100 for a couple years now and it's been performing great all that time. Now this last week or two, I've been getting transfer interupts in two specific situations (that I've noticed at least). First is when trying to d/l a file, the d/l always stops at about 40 to 50% complete. I'll have to manually cancel & restart and repeat this at least half a dozen times before I get a complete download.

The other happens when watching something on youtube. If it's a video longer then 2 minutes, it never fully downloads/buffers to completion. Never an issue before but it will always stop at some point usually just before half way.

I've bypassed the DGL and gone straight modem to pc and not had these issues so hence, it seems reasonably likely it's the router acting up in some way. I reset the DGL back to it's factory defaults and still get the same transfer freezes. Connection status has been good though. Not getting any disconnects, online gaming is fine etc. I can surf away to my heart's content all the while before, during or after one of these data freezes occurs. The only thing systemwise that's changed recently is I installed a fresh new Win7 OS on what used to be an XP system. DGL firmware is ver. 1.7

Anyone have any ideas at all??? :-\

does it happen on XP?
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand alone modem or does it have a built in router?

Try a different browser when downloading files? Opera, FF, Flock?
Try turning off IPv6 protocol in Windows 7 Network properties as this router doesn't support IPv6. Heard that this can cause connection issues. It's on by default.

How many devices are connected to the router?

Well it didn't happen before I rebuilt my pc and it was running XP then.

I'm on Cable, Astound Broadband which I believe is just Wave's locality name here in the NorCal Bay Area.

The modem is a Scientific Atlanta Webstar 2100. Just a modem.

Haven't tried a different browser, never used anything but IE before. ;)

I'll try the IPv6 protocol thing tonight. I like the sound of that. As I said, all was hunky dory before I changed my pc/os etc.

Four devices, PC, DTV DVR, 360, PS3.

edit: Tried turning off the IPv6 but it's no different.

How about setting up static reserved IP addresses on the router for the win 7 pc and set the pc to auto obtain an IP address.

Are you using any QoS rules like gamefuel? You can check out the gamefule sticky over in the DGL-4500 forum for this use. I use it and works great. Turn it off to test if it's on.
Check to see if you have Advanced DNS Services, if you do, turn it off.
Ensure Primary and 2ndary DNS is filled in under Basic/Internet/Manual
Ensure DNS relay is enabled under Basic/Network settings if you have this option.

I would recommend trying a different browser, I like opera and it works well and have some good features.

I kinda think it's something on the PC side.

I am having the same issue.  On various windows 7 boxes, the connection to the internet will go dead.  Keeps going back and forth for a while then starts working again. This does NOT happen on the XP boxes.
I have IPv6 disabled.  When the link drops, the lan side with computer connections works fine.  But if I am logged into the router, it shows the WAN side disconnecting.  My cable folks says they are seeing no issues to the modem.  So, after looking on the net, am starting to think there is an issue with this router based on a number of other folks having the same issues with windows 7.  Any thoughts, this is killing me

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.

Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

I just realised I never wrote back regarding this issue. I was never able to resolve it fwiw. Different browsers or diff. router settings make no difference. It's really only a problem with youtube videos and large downloads on the pc while everything else works fine like streaming Netflix or downloading movies to my DVR etc. I really think it's a router vs. Win7 thing... I've simply gotten in the habit of just bypassing the router and plugging the pc directly to the modem when I know I'm going to be doing either of those things becuase I'm too cheap and lazy to buy a new router.  ;)

I would try a new cable modem. I recommend the Motorola SB 6121. Great modem. The 4100 is a good router and should work well for you.

What is your up and download speeds you pay for from the ISP? This could also be an issue as well if the speed isn't fast enough.

Not sure why you recommend a new modem seeing as I have no issues with the pc hooked up to the modem directly.  ???

It's certainly something going on between the router and the pc that started once I rebuilt it and won't go away... maybe it has to do with my motherboard's ethernet adapter for all know. It literally works perfect in everyway except for these two things, downloading large files and youtube videos. Either way, while it may be a little inconvienient, it takes me all of 2 seconds to swap cat6 cables when I need to so I'm not too fussed.  ;)

fwiw, my speeds are excellent with or w/o the router connected, usually a little better then what I'm paying for actually. The router I used before I got the DGL-4100 (a Microsoft MN-100 I think) did give me worse speeds though and that's what prompted me to get the D-Link one in the first place.

Does this happen using a different PC or try using a different NIC in this current PC your using?

I only have the one pc so no can test another one and I don't use a separate NIC card, just the onboard one on the MB (which is a Gigabyte P67UD4B3 fwiw). But really, like I said above, after dealing with it for a year now, I'm not worried about it anymore. You're a good & determined mod here Furry and that's appreciated but I figure I just have one of those 1 in a million weird pc problems. If it was a widespread issue... it would be easy for me to find a lot of other instances like mine and I certainly cannot.

C'est la vie! It's cool. Thanks for your help.  :)

You could test a PCI NIC if this is a deck top. Understandable if you can't if it's a Laptop or AIO.

Anyways, Hope things keep working out for you. Gook luck.
