Title: wireless speed slow, wired speed fast
Post by: keijers on December 23, 2013, 12:31:05 AM
Hi, I've got a 845L and the wired internet speed is around 95mbps according to speedtest.net. That's quite good for a 100mbps internet connection.
However, my wireless doesn't go higher than 34 mbps. When I'm connected windows shows a connection speed of 65mbps. I know I can't reach the 95 over wireless. But why I can't reach the 65? Even when I'm standing with my laptop next to the router, the speed doesn't go up...

Is this normal behavior or is there a way to make it work faster?

The settings of the router are the out-of-the-box-settings.

is there any other wireless might disturb, such as microwave, wireless phone and others ?
do you try using same computer or different ?

i've tried 2 laptops, 1 tablet and 1 phone.

Results:
1 laptop 34mbps
1 laptop 42mbps
tablet: 24mbps
phone (galaxy s2) 18mbps

I've put the router in the livingroom in the middle of the room on the table to test for better results, but no difference.

it also depend on the wireless of the Laptop. Older laptop only have slow WiFi.
If you have new chipset which support faster connection it will be faster.
I try 2 different N device and the result also different.
G is lower

I know, but why i only get 34 when i'm connected at 65? My internet speed wired is 100, so it should be around 60 mbps imo. So why that drop of 31 mbps?

It's not recommended to speedtest over wireless connections. There are many variables that can impact and cause inaccurate wireless speed test results. I recommend alway speed testing wired LAN connections first to ensure you are getting your ISP paid UP and Down speeds.

Connections on WiFi should be to what the Mfr if the device supports. Various devices have different connection speeds. This is different from actual data xfer speeds. You'll need to refer to the devices Mfr support site to find out what devices support for wireless connection speed between the device and the router.

I've tried everything, all the different combinations of security and bands, N mode only, G mode only and so on. Still max 65mbits connection speed (34mbit internet speed).

As I said before, my ISP up and down speed is 100mbit (fiber).

I think I bring it back to the store. At least I should get 50mbit. Because that is what I get from a 50mbit connection at my parents home (with a different cheap old wifi router...)

Some devices depending on how they are designed, may not be able to support those kinds of speeds over Wifi. Only wired LAN devices can support those speeds. As long as your wired PCs are seeing those speeds, the Wireless will be working as designed on these routers. If your getting 65Mbit speeds on your wireless devices, your probably hitting a limit on the wireless devices, which this is not a router issue.

Suggested performance wireless settings would be Single mode N, WPA2/AES only, Auto 20/40Mhz, HT20/40Mhz Co-existence OFF on 2.4Ghz. Mixed AC and N mode, WPA2/AES only, Auto 20/40/80Mhz on 5Ghz.

Any status on this?  ???

Re: Slow wireless performance while on 5GHz?

I found the solution after days of testing.

Same problem. Slow 5Ghz performance, while 2.4Ghz and LAN cable works perfect.
With 5Ghz I was getting only 10Mbps download. With 2.4Ghz 40Mbps and LAN is 200Mbps. My ISP is 200Mbps,

I am on European version.

What you need to do to fix 5Ghz issue is to change some settings through admin panel. So just login to D-LINK admin page and update the settings I will list below.

1) Settings >> Wireless >> 5GHz
802.11 Mode: 802.11ac only
Wi-Fi Channel:   Auto
Transmission Power: High
Channel Width: Auto 20/40/80 Mhz

2) Settings >> Wireless >> WI-FI PROTECTED SETUP

PBC: DISABLED
PIN: DISABLED

3) Settings >> Wireless >> Guest Zone

2.4GHz and 5GHz DISABLED!

4) Settings >> Network >> Advanced Settings
IPv4 Multicast Streams: DISABLED
IPv6 Multicast Streams: DISABLED

5) Management >> System Time >>Automatic Time Configuration.
Update Time Using an NTP server: DISABLED

After updating settings restart the router and 5Ghz will score 200Mbps download now instead of 10Mbps.

What happens if you re-enable IPv4 Multicast Streams? I highly doubt that this will impact 5Ghz performances...
