No WAN auto-renew IP
« on: April 26, 2011, 06:42:00 PM »

Here's my problem: my router doesn't renew it's WAN IP. I connect fine, I use the internet fine, everything is perfect and then either my internet connection drops temporarily (my area has power issues so my ISP's gear is subject to occasional brown-outs which cause my modem to lose block-sync and my router to drop it's DHCP address) or the DHCP lease expires and my router just sits there with 0.0.0.0 instead of requesting a new IP. I'm actually surprised it doesn't even resort to APIPA, just 0. As soon as I log into it and manually tell it to renew the IP under the Status pages, it gets a new IP and works fine until the next time my internet drops or my lease expires.

I'm currently running the default 2.02NA firmware because there's no mention in the firmware notes for 2.03NA or 2.05NA addressing WAN DHCP client issues. I've done some searching but everything seems to be about people having problems with configuring the router's LAN DHCP server which I don't even use. My problem is exclusively with the DHCP client on the WAN side. Has anyone seen or experienced this problem before?

What ISP service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand alone or built in router?

Cable internet with an SB6120. My ISP is a small reseller in Canada that uses Rogers lines.

Here's how my log looks this morning:

Apr 27 08:09:53    Lease of 24.246.18.7 obtained, lease time 3600
Apr 27 08:09:53    Sending discover...
Apr 26 21:26:57    DHCP Release WAN IP address = 0.0.0.0
Apr 26 21:26:57    Unicasting a release of 24.246.18.4 to 24.246.18.1

So the lease was dropped at 21:26:57 and it didn't try to obtain a new one until I got home and manually hit: "renew IP" at 8:09...at which time it then sent a discover and obtained a new IP. My question is why didn't it do that automatically? As far as I can tell, my DIR-825 didn't even attempt to get a new IP. Maybe it's depressed. It's like it just said, "Oh, my lease is up? That's ok. I'll just be homeless for awhile. No point even asking if I can stay, I know they'll just kick me out. Nobody loves me. :("

I just upgraded to 2.05NA. Sadly, I never checked beforehand if rebooting the modem would cause the DIR-825 to drop the IP and wait so the only way to test is to wait a few days and see if the problem occurs again. I'll post back once my router's lease expires.

That would be a good test, after everything is on, Power off the modem for say 1min and then bring it back online. Check the router. I have the SB 6120 here and love it. Let us know how it goes.
