A little more information please - what OS etc. It would also help to know what you are trying to do so we can give advice that is direct to the problem.
That being said I have connected a PC to a DNS-323 using a switch because we didn't have any cross over cables made up.
You can access it with a browser on 193.168.0.32, you should also be able to get access with filezilla again on the same IP.

Yes - it can be done - you will need to set static addresses on both the NAS & the laptop - be warned, choose your ip address schema carefully.

Of course it can be done. It is simple, basic networking. You don't need a hub, switch, router or cross over cable as the port is autoMDX, so a standard cable is fine (assuming it is rated for the speed you want to connect at). All operating systems that support networking will work.
As Fordem said set static IP addresses in the same subnet. An alternative is to keep DHCP but run a DHCP server on your PC, or the one in the firmware on the DNS323.

The 323 has an integrated DHCP server - you could if you wanted, build a small business network (with no internet access) using a switch, the DNS-323 for shared storage & printing and of course your network clients.
