[Solved] Problem formatting HDD with DNS-345
« on: March 22, 2012, 12:39:02 PM »

Hello,

I have some problems with my new DNS-345, i hope someone could answer me ;)

So, i have put in 4 HDD Seagate 2To (they are in the compatibility list), when i want to format them in RAID 5 with the web interface, it's time to cry (my bank account too ;D)

First time, it crash after 32% of formatting, now it crash at 15.
At this point, we can't ping the NAS, reboot it is necessary (Many reboot, 2 or 3 times ...)

I have try to format it with 4 different computers, and 3 switch + 3 ip range different (The woman at the support was so useless, 1 hour on call to ... nothing !)

SMART Test (Quick) is OK, no HDD failure.

If someone have something to try .... i'm ready !

I really don't know if this will help, but you can try mounting and reformatting each HDD in a Windows PC to remove any traces of the DNS-345's earlier formatting attempts.  The DNS-345 formats HDDs using the Linux file system and won't recognize FAT or NTFS partitions.  After you cleanse all four HDDs, try reformatting your RAID array.

Please post your results.

Thanks for your response.

I have formatted the 4 drives in NTFS under Win 7 and now, it crashes before 0%, it's because of the NTFS format ?
I can try another formatting system (EXT4 ?) with a real tool like partiton magic for example.

An NTFS formatted HDD will not cause the DNS-345 to crash. The DNS-345 only recognizes the EXT file system. Any Windows formatted HDD will be unrecognizable, forcing a prompt to reformat.

At this point, I would reset the DNS-345 to the factory defaults. Press and hold the reset button on the rear of the unit for > 8 seconds. Also, upload a fresh copy of the latest firmware to rule out any corruption.

If the RAID-5 array fails again, try creating a simpler RAID array (e.g. RAID-1) to make sure everything is working properly.

So i have install the latest firmware (maybe Beta, it's not a problem), after a reboot, it crashed again but now, it seems i have win in stability. (1 hour without crash)

He's trying to make 2 Raid 1 (HDD 1 -> 2 and 3 -> 4). 0-32% in 6-7min, and he jumped to 42% (35min now ^^) and the 2nd HDD has his light off.

This morning when it crashed a 32% the 4th was off, so a i switched the 2 and 4, we can confirm that the drive has a problem somewhere ? Raid 5 must require much precision, so the NAS crash because of that maybe.

Maybe i can try to buy a new one before make an RMA on the drive.

Thank you for your fast reply, i will keep you inform :)

Max.

Hopefully the new HDD is causing these problems.
Please post back when you have a new HDD to test.

I'm glad everything worked out.

Please post back in a few weeks and let us know how stable things are. . . Not having used the DNS-345, I'm also curious how the performance is (upload and download average mbps throughput).

Good luck  :)
