If you would like to contribute a HDD you personally tested to this list, please post the HDD make/model/capacity, configuration, length of time in use, and observations (e.g. stability, performance, etc) as a reply to this thread.

I have just installed two DNS-320 boxes using two Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 drives.  There is some free space between the drive and the support tabs to the right.  So pretty much they are supported by only the SATA connector.  Minimal usage, but formating, write and reads are all working.

For over almost a year now I am using 2 1B Western Digital  Scorpio Blue HDDs. Modell: WD10JPVT-00A1YT0. This is a 2.5" drive 5400rpm link: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=140
RAID-1 configuration, backup monthly. Never had to restore.

2.5" HDD. . . I presume you are using an adapter to physically support the unit?

Kind of funny... I haven't seen the unit when I ordered, so I ordered adapters also. However, the adapters place the drives in the middle of the adapter, which is not good, because in the DNS-320 you have the connections in the side... Not sure if its been added yet, but I got 2x of Seagate Barracuda 2TB ST32000542AS Drives and they work perfectly on 2.0 and 2.02

Synology makes a tiny 4-bay NAS designed for 2.5" HDDs.

Hi,

just to let you know, I've been using a single HITACHI 2TB H3D20003254S for probably just less than a year now and have had a few problems.  It once seemed to become corrupt and required reformatting loosing everything I had on there, a few weeks ago it seemed to loose all of the UPNP library so that needed to be  recreated by the NAS and has just seemingly stopped working completely with the NAS - it needed the UPNP library to be recreated again but froze on 0% and now the NAS won't recognise the drive.  I will try it in my PC at some point to see if it can still be used as it seems a waste otherwise.

I'm not sure what would make a drive 'incompatible' so maybe someone can confirm whether these are the effects of an incompatible drive, a faulty drive or the NAS misbehaving.  So long as its not the NAS misbehaving I was going to try to replace it with a drive on the official list, the only problem is that it seems like quite an old list and the drives available at places like ebuyer/dabs aren't the exact models you have listed, after a bit of googling I've only found a couple of drives that are available and those are refurbished on ebay.  As the enclosure is still selling is there any intention to update the official list in the future?

Every so often D-Link publishes an updated list, although there is no known schedule as to when or how frequently this happens. Please keep in mind that the list published by D-Link simply indicates the HDDs that were tested by D-Link and does not necessarily mean that untested HDDs won't work just as well -- although there is an inherent risk in using untested HDDs, which is why we're compiling this user-based list.
