Blocked sites and schedules...
« on: February 22, 2012, 03:34:55 PM »

I've got several sites blocked on the router, but no matter how I enter them, they're still accessible. I also have an access schedule set up for my kids, but it seems to block their access at weird times, not according to the schedule. Any clues?

Can you give us some example of how your entering in the sites and the schedule?

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.

Some things to try:
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.

The problem I'm having is not with my modem. My kid's iPods lose connectivity at times other than scheduled. Everything has an IP reservation, so that's not an issue.

My other thing is how to block web sites via the router. I've created entries two ways. For example, "www.disney.com" and "disney.com." Neither works. The one thing I haven't tried is to put in the full URL.

My router has the latest firmware.

This section is where you add the Web sites to be used for Access Control. The Web sites listed here are used when the Web Filter option is enabled in Advanced → Access Control.
Website Filter Parameters
Website URL/Domain
Enter the URL (address) of the Web Site that you want to allow or deny; for example: google.com. Do not enter the http:// preceding the URL. Enter the most inclusive domain; for example, select allow and enter dlink.com and access will be permitted to both www.dlink.com and support.dlink.com.

Note:  Many web sites construct pages with images and content from other web sites. For example, to access my.yahoo.com, you would need to select allow and type yahoo.com, yimg.com, and doubleclick.net.

What you wrote about is exactly what I've done. It doesn't work for any site I've entered, no matter how it's entered. I've tried with just the root "disney.com." The only way I've been able to block sites is by editing the host file on each machine. I'd rather do it at the router level.

Instead of trying to block the time frame, set up the time frame schedule for when the devices can be used. This might work better.
Adjust the Schedule first.

Advanced Tab: Access Control
First screen shows:
Enable Access Control:   "X" check the box

Step 1 Choose Policy Name
Policy Name: Available Hours
Next

Step 2 Choose Schedule to Apply to this policy
"Available Hours of Use".
Next

Step 3
Select Machine
Address Type: IP- Mac- Other Machine (Selected MAC)
IP Address:
Machine Address:(Selected each Mac address from the drop downlist)
Next

Step 4
Select method of filtering
Method __Log Web Access Only _ Block All Access __Block Some Access (Selected Block All Access)
Apply Web Filter: I did not check this box
Apply Advanced Port Filter: I did not check this box
Next

Step 5 Port Filter
I did not enter data

Step 6
Configure Web Access Logging
Web Access Logging:
Enabled (I clicked: Enabled)
Disabled

Save
Takes you back to access control
Policy Table shows the new polciy.
I enabled the policy: Available Hours.

Save Settings

I'll give it a try. I got nothing to lose at this point.

Would you believe it worked to give access but didn't deny access per the schedule. I added another rule to block access via schedule. We'll see how it works.

It didn't work. Nothing I've tried has worked. I was wrong to think that it actually blocked on schedule.

It also doesn't block web sites or domains, no matter how they're listed. Those features are Vaporware, as far as I'm concerned.

I would call DLink support and talk to level 2 tech support and ask about this.

I've tried this on my router and its working, blocking website according to schedule I created. Applied schedule to above steps under access control and enter websites under advance>website filter. I have the firmware version 1.25NA, Hardware Ver A2

So it is working for you using the schedule you created?

yes, created one for this day, from this hour/minute to another hour/minute and its denying access to website i have listed under advanced>website filter. By the way, under step 4 you had posted above, I have the website filter checked.
